It seems to me that more and more of Pentax flashes and cameras is going to use P-TTL instead of TTL. The new *istDL doesn't even support TTL. Do you think it would be unwise to buy a TTL flash now that doesn't support P-TTL?

Yes.

Since Pentax P-TTL flashes also has standard TTL and programmed auto flash, they work with all Pentax digital and film SLR's, as well as the medium format 645 serie and the 67. However, Sigma's P-TTL flashes doesn't seem to support older bodies as good as Pentax, so for full compatibility - buy Pentax. If this is unimportant to you, then Sigma is a good buy.

I was thinking more about an old Pentax flash that doesn't support P-TTL. Do you think it will still be usable on new models in two or three years from now.

Sorry,

just an information.I don't know how P-TTL works and what are the differencies with standard TTL.

thank you for your kindness

One reason why I went digital with Pentax DSLR was all my ttl flashes and lens are compatible.

Going C or N would have involved a major lens and flash upgrade.

Pentax has always been good with backward compatibility starting with the flange to film distance when they went from M42 to K mount.

True, but Pentax has also withdrawn some compatibility on the cheaper models since the late 90's... Not as much as Nikon, but still...

I could not find TTL compatibility listed as a feature of the new DS2 in Phil's specifications...

I'm not certain if this is a mistake or whether the camera genuinely doesn't support it, but as the DL certainly doesn't contain the TTL flash sensor there is the distinct possibility that Pentax has decided to drop support for this flash functionality in their new models...

I have no doubt that the DS2 supports standard TTL - after all Pentax writes on it's own homepage " Inheriting all the outstanding features of its predecessor".... ! Pentax tech specs can be a bit confusing, it's completely normal that some information is left out. It's simply typical Pentax and this does not mean that it is not there.

I guess we have to wait for someone who actually has a DS2 and an older ttl pentax dedicated falsh to test it out to confirm one way or another.

Nah, we do as we always do here - someone finds the manual, post a link and everyone reads it. Then we have a looong discussion about what the manual really says. Then, finally, someone grabs the 'cam and try out the functions discussed and post the findings. This process usually takes 3 months and it's very entertaining.

Been there and done that.

That is why all of us hang around.

But this forum, unlike other camera clubs, we have the interpetation from different translations of the standard Japanese DS2 manual, and other literature.

BTW - We forgot to ask Godfrey
