i just got my rebel xt today, and have been fooling around with it taking a few shots. the first time i connected it to my computer, the pictures downloaded fine, and showed up in windows xp. but now when i try i can't download any photos.

i know there are photos on the camera, because i can view them on the camera. but when i connect it with the usb cable and go to my computer and open up the camera, all it shows is 1 folder, and there isn't anything inside the folder.

i dunno, maybe i just need to get a card reader?

try rebooting the machine and setting the camera to PTP mode. also install Canon's software (wia driver). you should get a cardreader, yes.

after some more fooling around, it seems that jpg files will show up, but raw files will not.

this is in both, the canon software, and in windows.

anyone have any other thoughts? i just hope the raw files will show up through a card reader. :(

there was a bulk of threads on RAW files appearing as jpegs with the 350d. the solution was to install all canon's software.

You may also want to download the Microsoft RAW utility. It'll allow you to view your RAW files the same way you view your JPG files (thumbnails and viewer will work).

Your software has to be capable of handling RAW files otherwise it cannot recognise them. Have you tried the free Rawshooter essentials from Corel ?

i had the microsoft raw viewer installed, but thought that maybe it messed something up because i couldnt see the files, so i removed it and still nothing.

it's not a problem of being able to open raw files, i have cs2, and all the canon software from the main cd installed.

and it's not a problem of raw files showing up as jpegs.. i took 2 pictures, 1 jpg, and 1 raw, and when i browse the camera on my computer, it shows that there is 1 folder on the camera, and inside the folder is only the jpg that i shot.

the camera came with 4 cds..
"software instruction manual"
"photo studio"
"jumpstart kit for photoshop cs2"
"eos digital solution disk"

i installed everything from the "eos digital solution disk" and it sort of locked up while installing photostitch, but i ended that process and it went through and still installed all the other software, and photostitch works too.

i'll try the other cds and see what i can come up with. thanks for the help

ok i got them to show up. but they only show up when the camera is on ptp mode like someone suggested earlier.

not sure why they didn't show up before though. the camera was on ptp mode when i got it.

ah well, they show up just fine now and that's all that matters. thanks everyone

was starting to think it could have been some kind of conflict with my canon scanner. first few times i hooked the camera to the computer, the scanner started making noises. stupid windows.

..off to buy a card reader now and shoot some photos. :)
