Is the "N" designation implying a step up for the current 1D MII camera or a step down from the 1Ds MKII camera?

I am not sure which camera it is based off of. Assuming we know none of the details which is the camera that is changing?

It is a replacement for the 1DmkII not the 1DsmkII

Canon has used 'n' in a few situations in its model lineup, notably F-1 to F-1n and EOS-1 to EOS-1n. The forner was a minor tweak (note the F-1n is not the same as a "New F-1"), the latter (the EOS-1n) was a major new camera with many new features.

When Canon came out with the Japanese model of the Digital Rebel-Digital Kiss the "step up" model was designated Digital Kiss N. It had incremental updates and a few more megapixels. The 1D MkII body has a lot of life left in it. I am guessing that the 1D MkII N will have more megapixels and a few updating tweaks to the body. It will spruce up an already solid camera body.
