I returned my S85 within my 30-days for refund. I just cannot see keeping it with the 707 around the corner. If the 707 was $1500 USD then I would probably not consider, but $999 - wow!

But in meantime I will be without a camera, so I decided I am going to buy a Canon Pro90IS from place that has a 30-day return policy also. I sort of like the idea of 10x optical zoom and will be able to evaluate it better in my hands rather than reading on-line about it. Sounds crazy to stick with a 2.6 MP camera at this point but I am sure there will be an update from Canon to the Pro90IS (maybe 5 MP) and if they announce it soon (within the next month) it could make me seriously question whether or not to get a 707!

I am interested in comparison is between the Pro90IS and the Sony F505V. Comments on which of the two is better would be appreciated and could give idea what to expect from Canon.

No disrespect, but don't you think it is a bit rude to buy a camera knowing you will most likely return it? I see no problem returning the S85 since you did not know the 707 was going to be released within days... but you wouldn't be without a camera very long so why not just wait?

Travis

Ya you are right sorta, but in case of this Canon Pro90 I am going to get their demo-unit so it is not brand-new and not like I am taking a brand-new one out of box and defacing it so they have a hard time selling if I return it(I do not like doing this to stores). Also I have talked to them at this store and told them straight-out that if I do not like it I will return it and they didn't care what I did - 30 days return even if I don't like the color of the camera strap. It is not like I am trying to pull a fast-one on them, if they offer this then I will take them up! Since what happened with the S85 and finding out about the 707 coming out, I think the successor to the Pro90IS may be something else to look at as comparison to the 707. If I really like the Pro90IS and want to purchase the successor I will forgoe the 707. But what happen if I wait and buy the 707 and the new Canon comes out - then I be thinking this all over again and then I got this 707 I have to return! But I may not like the Pro90IS at all and then that will discourage me from even looking at the successor to it. Did that make sense?

unfair to S85, just because of F707 is coming up. u returned it back. What a shame, U are lucky that u have a return policy, in my country, after you buy , u have to live with it..

And let me just follow this up with some more to the situation that I did not explain... maybe people get the wrong impression that I bad person but this is not the case...

Maybe some where they live do not understand this, but it is normal here (Canada) to buy something to evaluate and be able to return! That is the only way sometimes to get an idea for different products. Not all stores offer this though! Just because one store offers while another doesn't does not mean it is taboo to take them up on it!

I just did not get the idea to go buy a temporary replacement camera while waiting for the F707, I made it clear that I could decide on something else instead of the F707... I am considering all the options! The store salesman tells me I can take home the Pro90IS and try out and see if I like the style of camera even though he knows there is a good chance I will return it, but they cannot really lend it to me so it has to go through as a sale! I even discussed with him that I really interested in a newer model hopefully coming out soon that is better and told him I may not be happy with this one and return it... he didn't care! Now since he does this I tend to like the store better and maybe I will do one of several things... return the Pro90IS, keep it (always a possibility), buy the new model from them when it comes out (if it comes out, still speculative at this point) and maybe even buy the F707 from there instead... or buy something completely different in the future!

Some examples follow of why I like buying from stores with good return-policy... sure there are better deals online and I may pay a bit more but if I ordered some things online I would be screwed! Price is not everything!

I remember one store I had bought a Dazzle USB (MPEG1 capture device) and a couple months later Dazzle came out with upgrade drivers/software but they were charging money for it which I thought was not right! I went to the store that I bought from and they had new stock that included the new software... I asked if I could borrow the CD for an hour to copy but the salesperson (whom I knew personally even) said no because nothing can leave store unless it is purchased and his job could technically be on the line if he got caught (slim chance but you never know). Instead he told me to buy it and then return it! So I did just that!

When I had bought my S85 I was uncertain if it was really what I wanted and expressed my feelings, but the manager of the store told me to buy it and try it and I had 30 days! He knew that I am a picky person and that it was high probability of me returning it! Because I have dealed with his store over the years it is not a problem (I do not return everything to him). He would have let me keep the S85 and exchange for a 707 when it came out, but I told him that I was concerned I would start to put wear-and-tear in the S85 and make it harder for him to re-sell (it still looks brand-new with all stickers on it even).

For my Home Theater (I am always adding/changing things) I buy most of my hardware from a local place and I can return for full-refund no-questions asked within 10 days (well they are curious why I return it if I don't like it for whatever reason) and exchange anything I buy (for full 100% credit) within 90 days (even speakers). They also lend me hardware to take home and try out (ranging from cabling to $2K A/V receiver). I have done all of this and without these options I would have been stuck with inadequate components and not as good sounding setup and unhappy.

I am just tryin to make it crystal-clear the situation here and please nobody jump to conclusion that I scamming or inconsiderate... if a store offers the policy of no-questions-asked return then why not if it is something I am interested in which will help me get the product I like the best? Now I see people really abuse this and I do not agree with this - I have seen people return year-old bedsheets to Costco for full refund because they develop little lint-balls (I am not making this up) and I know of one guy that mods playstations - he is not that good and wrecks the occasional one, so he just buys a new one from a store and returns the screwed-up one saying it doesn't work!

For those that think differently, too bad! If you start buying from some local-stores and get to have a relationship with them you will then only understand. If some cannot do because country they live in, that is unfortunate but that does not make me feel worse!

What I really wanted to know is people's opinions as far as Pro90IS compared to the Sony F505V!

Um nope! If I decide on the 707 I keep that (I promise). The ONLY reason I was interested in the Pro90IS was 10x optical zoom. But I have looked at that other thread here about 2x zoom lens on 505V and that looks interesting possibility for 707!

If it makes anyone feel better, I kept the memory stick and USB r/w I bought from same store! I cannot return these! I sorta did this on purpose so I would have a better excuse to go for the 707!

So no opinions on the Pro90IS ? Maybe it is not so good and I don't have to bother trying one!

Maybe I ask in the Canon forum!

Brian--

Listen, you had it right the first time. If the store offers a 30 day no questions asked return policy they are doing it because they have a very carefully calculated cost/benefit analysis saying that to offer such a policy is to their advantage, and significantly so. My colleagues here are a trifle naive about this, and act as if you are mistreating someone. While I agree that in one-on-one personal interaction this idea of taking the camera with a pretty clear idea that you may not keep it would be playing "hardball," so to speak, with reference to a purchase at a store offering the 30 day return, your plan is nothing more or less than the store has anticipated and determined to be in its best interest (not yours). As a consumer, your responsibility is to shop wisely and to use all available means to do so. As one of the posters remarked, eventually the store will drop the policy, just as, for example, OUTPOST.COM did after the policy gained for the company the consumer awareness that OUTPOST.COM wanted. If you thought, as an OUTPOST customer, they would keep the 30 day no questions return policy forever, you were simply naive. It's business, and everything in business has a reason, and that reason is always eventual financial benefit to the business.

Enjoy the camera, quit feeling guilty.

So I guess you and Brian think that it's just fine to walk into a store, buy a camera, use it on a 2-week vacation, and then return it? If so, then it's people like you that owe me the 15% restocking fee that I had to pay when I returned my S85 to Best Buy for good cause.

I bought an open item 64mb CF card at Best Buy - came complete with someone's Hawaiian Wedding Pictures!

I reamed BB for it, and it was inexcusible on the comsumers side. Gee, at least erase the darn thing......

Brian you are wrong. Maybe you live into the letter of the law, but morally and ethically you are wrong. If you can sleep with yourself, then fine, but buying ANY product and premeditating returning it? Dead wrong.

You would make a great American (I am one, so everyone hold your flames), a user through and through.

P.S. Just how insurance fraud drives the price of insurance up for the "rest" of us you do the same with your practices. Sorry, you are a pig. Shame is you don't typify the normal, respectful Canadian.

I agree with Chronic...if a store has a 30 day return policy no questions asked then the consumer has every right to take advantage of this policy! You should not be quesioning Brian. Question the store why they have such a policy.

If you have ever bought anything from Best Buy before you should know they will always always stick you with a restocking fee. For this exact reason I will never do business with Best Buy.

Hey I look at the 30day return policy as this. You can Test drive a car can't you, before you purchase it. And most Car dealers will let you take one for a weekend as long as you are over 21 years old. So buying a Camera or anything else and trying it out is a great resource. To getting to know what you like and keeping the right product that suits your needs.

Hey you all shouldn't feel bad once I bought a portable cd player from a local - Mart and after 3months had past. I found out that Sony had a nicer player out so I returned it, without a receipt and they said no problem. I took my money that I got back and went and bought the newer player from somebody else, they didn't carry it. I have been a return shopper to this store many times they have made that money back and then some to cover their loses.
Really nice return policies. Help to keep satisfied (Repeat) customers.
Thanks:)

Brian, you have explained yourself perfectly clear and you are absolutely right. Here in the Netherlands there are only a few stores that have a return-policy and I buy from them if possible. Too often I have found a product is not really what it supposed to be once you start using it for real. You cannot make a good judgement from tests and promotional stuff.

so good choice and let us know how the canon behaves. I just bought a Olympus 2100UZ and are very happy with it dispite the 2 megapixels compared to the 2.6 I had on the F505V.
