New Oly-E20 with 5.2MP rumours

Fully agree regarding the ccd. I also suspect that the E-?? will be significantly faster particularly with the writing, reading, and display functions. Olympus will improve, if possible, those little nits that the E-10 has. It is possible that they could work the focus problem with the split optics thing. In any event, the fixing of the nits will likely preclude a simple upgrade of the ccd only.
Hi John
My sentiments exactly - but I'd be sad if they then made the front
element bigger . . . . so that the add on lenses didn't!

Otherwise . . . . . . more predictable focusing in low light . . .
. . . faster preview . . . . . bigger buffer . .

Actually, to be honest, if they just made the lense 28-140 with the
same front element and 5.2Mp and kept everything else the same, I'd
be pretty tempted.

But if they spoilt the ergonomics I wouldn't be interested,
whatever they'd done to it!

kind regards

Jono,
Judging by the past I suspect that the E-20 will turn out to be
exactly the same as the E-10 except that they will just insert a
5.2 Mp imager in it. I think that the 5+ Mp CCDs floating around
have the same 2/3 in. size as the one presently in the E-10, so
physically it is an easy swap. Olympus has done this in the past
with their upgraded "new" cameras. It makes perfect sense to use
the existant R&D, tooling, and accessories to breath new life into
a very successfull line. I also suspect that the E-10 will have a
significant drop in price at the same time and will still be kept
inthe lineup. Now, what would be really incredible and "consumer
friendly" is if they also offered an "upgrade" path to present E-10
owners by swapping the CCD for the 5.2, for a certain price of
course. But then again, I must be on drugs to even contemplate such
a thing! :-)

Hi
This photo-store in germany has some news of the new Oly-E20 with
5.2MP. A presentation only for VIPs was today on the IFA 2001.

Olympus has already announced that they will use a 4/3" sensor in their upcoming camera. The blurry photo of the camera that you can see by following this Japanese link indicates that the new camera will closely resemble the E10. Scroll down to the news flash item dated 2001/07/11, and then follow links to your heart's content. The starting point is in English, but it turns to Japanese very quickly.

Brian,

This I believe refers to the "interchangeable lens SLR" that Oly and Kodak are coming up with next year. The E-20 is going to be something for now, just a slightly upgraded version of the E-10.

Hi JJG:

Thanks for that. The translation is about 10 times better (though still far short of completely understandable) than the one provided earlier on this forum.

My sentiments exactly. The ONLY way I will consider the new E-20 is if A)Olympus improved image quality at higher ISO's(with more options here also), AND b) Has a 6X zoom.

I'm not gonna bother upgrading unless these two are addressed....because the jump from 4.1 to 5.2 megapixels alone is just not worth it if you ask me.
Ich bin auslander und sprechen sie nicht gut deutch! Did I
slaughter that one as bad as I think I may have? :)

Rumors, rumors. If you can't love the one you want, love the one
you're with. Loving my here and present E10.

:)

Hmmmm,
Wonder what happend to the Olympus Info on
http://www.foto-erhardt.de/index.shtml
Doesn't seem to be there [anymore]....????

Rolf
Rolf,

It's probably gone because someone originally goofed and the news item should never have been leaked in the first place as they were probably under a non-disclosure agreement. They are doing damage control by removing it now from their site. (Sort of like closing the barn doors after the cows have gone. :-))
