Why the passion over the H1 & not the V3

I am trying to figure out why everyone is so passionate about their H1. I am sure it is a great camera and I am also considering purchasing one. It just seems the V3 has so many more options - like a hot shoe, Night Shot, 7.2 megapixel and MS & CF slot to name a few.

I just can’t figure out why people are not raving about the V3 like they are the H1. Is there some key difference or a flaw with the V3 I am missing when I read the reviews and forums?

I know that the H1 is $100 less and has the awesome 12x zoom with steady shot. Is that the main feature that is causing its owners to fall so deeply in love?

I currently own the F707 that I have been extremely happy with (over 30,000 shots taken). I just need something with a higher memory capacity, faster read/write speed, and less shutter lag.

My dream machine would be an H1 with a swivel body (like the F7x7, F828), hot shoe and night shot. Is that asking so much? :)

Just add:

RAW
Mechanical zoom
larger lens with 9mm CCD (like the V3) and 7 or 8MP (800 ISO)
remote controllability

A kinda DSC-HF8....

D S C - V 1, long exposures (night/astro), remote control by computer (R M - V D 1 modified)

the v3 is had too much noise under low light conditions my sister had one we did not like the noise levels she then got the H1 no noise at all better sharper pictures. i think its all about the new ccds

Both cameras have their unique features and are excellent. Just that the H1 is new and people are showing off their new toy. Same thing happened with every other model that was newly introduced.

People still post very nice shots from their V1, 7x7, 828, V3, px, .... just that those posts get lost very quickly in the current H1 excitement. Just keep an eye out and also venture into pages 2 and 3 of the postings.

Personally, I love my V3 and whenever I get a chance I try to post something up.

The zoom: 432 mm native, 730 with adapter.
The 2.5" LCD
the zoom
The lush, gorgeous colors. A new generation of color, IMHO
The zoom
The price!
The zoom
The Image Stabilizatin
The zoom
Superb ergonomics
The zoom

and, of course, the zoom! :)

Why the excitement? A whole new generation of -value-. For around $400, you get what used to cost thousands. And it really, really works :)

How would you like a:

Zoooom: 518mm native and more with adapters
Large 2.5" LCD AND EVF
Image Stabilization
Under $700 (Street Price)
Macro mode focus to 1mm from the lens
filter threads
virtually free storage

I had one!

I had the V3 but it was a little too unsaturated in color. That's why I'm not raving about it. It was very very sharp though! It wasn't really advertised. Here in Canada, the price was WAY too high! WAY WAY too high! It was $899 and the F828 was $1099 (later $999)! So there was a lot more camera in the F828 for only $200 more. If the H1 came out at $699 here maybe a lot more people would have bought it.

Ooops... :) I meant to say if the V3 came out at $699 here (like the H1 is), a lot more people would have bought it!
And there was too much noise in low light.

My decision to buy the H1 over the V3 and every other camera on the planet is the ZOOM. I estimate that 90% of my photos are taken outdoors so the missing hot shoe was not an issue. I seldom print larger than 4x6 and if I print 8x10 a 5mp camera is good enough from me.

Not having to carry an additional lens to get near 12x zoom is a huge plus. No camera made today will provide me with everything I want so I must pick the features that I am most interested in.

I wouldn't say that I'm passionate about the H1 but I do think it's a great camera and at an exceptionally good price. I agree that most of the recent posts pertain to the H1 but that will calm down in another few weeks.

Yes, the Mavica FD-91...the fist digital still camera with image stabilization and a huge 14x zoom. Unfortumately it was also less than one megabyte.

Now if they could reintroduce the lens with new the V3's 7Mp CCD...that would be something!
Muse be a Mavica, no?

Very important to me was the image stabilization feature, the 12X zoom, the large LCD. This camera is easy to use and you get lots of features for the price. Bottom line, it is fun to use this camera.

You have to know where I'm coming from to understand my love of this camera.

My other digital is only 3 1/2 yrs old...has 3x zoom, no stabilizer, a small LCD and shutter lag that raised my blood pressure every time I used it. Outside in daylight, I could not see anything on the LCD. I bought a 3x tele lens for it and used it for one outing only. It was THAT bad. Oh...and it uses Smart Media cards which holds 128MB max. On a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe, I used up 4 cards. And those 4 cards were corrupted once we re-entered the US (they were in my purse). Trying to replace the SM since then has been near impossible. Don't get me wrong...it still takes great pictures...as long as the subject is still. Forget trying to get a bird in flight, or racehorses leaving the gate or approaching the finish line. It's not going to happen due to lag.

When researching cameras this spring, the H1 had everything I was looking for in an upgrade: 12x zoom, the image stabilizer, the large LCD (these old eyes aren't getting any better), and more MP than my Olympus. But it hadn't been released yet and I was still extremely concerned about lag.

Once in stores locally, it took less than 5 minutes for me to decide. I had previously checked out other similar cameras (Canon, Panasonic) and this one just 'felt' right.

So far I've found shutter lag almost non-existent and that includes indoor photos. (I know, I know, there's another current thread on this subject). My night photos have been stunning and colors just amazing. Plus the AF illuminator is just the cat's meow. What a neat feature I wasn't planning on.

All I can say is the honeymoon isn't over yet...

for me the FZ5 seems the best of the lot quality wise but lacks a number of features .. need to know about the S2 ? go and read the Canon forum :-) you'll soon find out about all the complaints about the little? annoyances .. funny enough the H1 users do not seem to live these small "problems" :-) and that is a trend that is found on other discussion forums too .. as a Canon owner that (& the pict quamity of the H1) was enough to make my chocie :-) (darn & still waiting !!)

In addition to my earlier post about why I liked the H1, one factor was prior experience with the Sony brand... excellent track record of my Sony DSC-s85 and the trouble free service that it has provided me. I just liked the feel of the camera in my hands.

Unlike many on the Forum, I am not a professional...photography is a fun thing for me and I try to avoid getting involved in the camera brand turf wars. I just want to have fun using a camera that will take good photos and one that is easy to use. The H1 fit those requirements.

I really can not comment about how the H1 stacks up against the S2 or the FZ5 because I have never owned nor used those two cameras. From the many test reports that I have read, it is quite possible that those two cameras are every bit the equal of the H1. I would suggest that you buy the camera of your choice, then learn how to use it and have fun with it. While the brand turf wars are being fought on the Forums, I am out taking photos and having fun.

actually my first choice is (or was?) S2, followed by H1. i'm having a second thought about S2 due to many remarks about the focusing at full zoom, & also the not-so-good auto-mode PnS. other than that, S2 seems ideal for me since my requirements are AA-bats & VGA movies. i'm basically a PnS guy, just only occasionally will do manual settings. so do you think i'm better of with H1 instead? i do find a liking for sony, the brand & even own a 3 yr old P5 which still serves me well, as well as a few other sony products. never bought a single canon in my life! another factor that go for sony is that i can get much cheaper price for it & it already come with the adaptor & hood (which S2 doesn't). so if you guys can keep encouraging me to go for H1 with your wonderful fascination for it then it's game over for S2 :)
