Hi Dorin,

You may use any PSD (Personal Storage Device) example:
http://fhoude34.free.fr/PortableHD.htm

Performance and battery life is very important, also weight and additional features (for some people) like browsing pictures, mp3/video player, etc

My personal choice is Compact Drive PD70X which is fastest PSD: http://www.compactdrive.com/product.php?p=pd70x http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1023&message=13829996

Check my latest album at (using a PSD was important):

The best software for Epson P-2000 is "Video Vault 3.0", a DivX licensed software.

Try to backup a DVD movie into P-2000 using "Video Vault 3.0", you will know what I'm talking about ( I know it's illegal). The video and audio quality are just unbelievable!

hrmm, the one thing the website doesnt say is what kind of HD it uses. Is it pata/sata? and can one easily switch between drives? Id be very interested in a device like this if I can throw in a spare drive I have here for that price.

Selected FAQ

Q: Can I upgrade the internal hard drive?

A: The P-2000 includes an internal 40GB hard drive specifically designed for it. There are no hard drive upgrades available for this product, and if you install a bigger hard drive, it may damage or adversely affect the operation of the product. This type of damage or operational failure is not covered by the P-2000 warranty.

Any kind of 2.5" laptop HDD up to 10mm thick would be fine, the fastest download speed you will get with larger buffer HDD (4500rpm drive is preferred than 5400rpm - less drain of batteries). Fastest flash cards available on the market can achive download speed 1min 35' per 1GB card and 3min15' per 2GB card. Works well with old cards and Microdrive.

The installation of a HDD is simple in about 2 min (the screwdriver is included in the set): http://www.edgeofsix.com/pd70x.html
You could download the manual from:
http://www.compactdrive.com/download.php?p=pd70x

Attached to USB computer port you may use the Compact Drive as a card-reader as well. When attached to computer you may remove the batteries and use the external adapter.

Sorry, I had actually foud that info and thought I had updated. I see there are also other psd's that allow you to install any HD. The LCD on that particular device looks quite nice, but Id prefer something I can throw a drive in as I have tons of spare HD's around (including laptop drives)

EPSON P-2000!
I bought EPSON P-2000 last week. The 3.8 inch Photo Fine display
provides outstanding definition for unsurpassed picture quality.
Highly recommend it (instead of recommended in dpreview, if price
is not that much).

Sorry, I cannot understand you bought this for the same price than a complete computer just for downloading you pics or seeing on LCD screen!!! A good camera is cheaper than this accessory...And for the value, you can buy at least 6GB memory cards CF or SD!

To downloading pics is additional advantage. To see DVD-like movie is really impressive. Try to catch up new technology and enjoy it.

This device is not 'just for downloading and reviewing your pics'...

It is also a portable movieplayer, in SlideShow mode it presents my portfolio, or it shows shots taken straight from the card on a large(r) screen, it is my travel MP3 player etc.

Buying 6 to 8 Gb CF/SD is not an option, since that only gets me 4 - 5 extra days on Holidays, the P-2000 has 38Gb free ;-))

And, YMMV, but none of my 'good camera's' is 'cheaper than the P-2000' ;-))

Different needs for different people ;-))

I have cobbled together one of these :

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11066573&whse=BC&topnav=&cat=21388&hierPath=84*21388*

the Wolverine product is actually a Vosonic X's Drive II 2160+ , with an unknown 60GB notebook HDD.

Being a thrifty tinkerer I decided to roll my own . I ordered one of these :

http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.445/it.A/id.588/.f and stuffed one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822152502 inside .

It took about 20 minutes to assemble + I let it charge overnight + about another 20 minutes to format the HDD , install drivers etc.

The end result is a PSD that can transfer (backup) a 1GB SD card in ~ 5 minutes. It will run for about 3 hours between charges. It comes with a very nice belt loop case , external charger and a neat dual headed USB cable(that will function as a charger if both are connected to main USB ports).

I have tested this thing by taking my S2 IS and continually shooting 8 minute video (1 GB ) clips -- popping it into the X's drive , transferring the contents of the card and popping the card back into the camera to format the card . I did this ~ 40 times over the course of a week and it has worked perfectly. When the X's drive is connected to my PC via USB 2.0 it takes ~ 40 seconds to transfer a 1 GB file.

I know this thing is rudimentary when compared to the Epson P2000 , but I could not justify spending more on a PSD than for my camera. At 1/3 the cost , this serves my purposes.

It is also a portable movieplayer, in SlideShow mode it presents my
portfolio, or it shows shots taken straight from the card on a
large(r) screen,
Supplement to SlideShow mode of P-2000:

It's not just a simple slide show. It offers 'Video Transition Effects'( from one scene to another ) like pan, zoom, fade, shutter... plus background musuc which mostly used in video editing software like Adobe Premiere or Ulead Video studio.

is it possible to make a new folder in the PSD drive for each different camera backup?

say i have 3 camera on the trip - can i make folder 1, folder 2 folder 3 for backup

I had been wondering about this myself.

Through experimentation I have realized that with the Vosonic appliance if you use different types of cards (in my case I will be using CF from a PowerShot A75 , SD from an S2 IS and xD PictureCard from an Oly D565) .The cards -- and their subsequent file number schemes will be labelled seperately. It is a simple matter to open the the files produced in Windows Explorer.

This leads to a potential problem with using two cameras that employ the same type of card that JUST HAPPEN to be coded to produce the same (or overlapping) file numbers.

NEWBIE ALERT Anybody know how to change file numbers on removeable media ?

For P-2000, it's easy. Here is how it works:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/epsonp2000/page3.asp
If you do choose to create an album after copying you'll be prompted to give it a name using the on-screen keyboard. Note that creating albums means you end up with two copies of each image; one in the Card Data directory and one in the new album. Images copied to the new album(or to any album for that matter) are renamed.

An iPod of course then you can also load your whole music collection on as well.

All the user interfaces on other portable units just don't cut it, with the iPod you can operate it just so comfortably in 1 hand with your thumb.
