Do you have a budget to work within?

I purchased a Canon inkjet 8200 about 18 months ago that gives beautiful results on Canon Photo Pro paper. The printer has since been replaced with the S800 that provides even better results. The prints from the 8200 are indistinguishable from professional quality prints in my eyes. I spend roughly $1 per 8X10 for paper and $1 per 8X10 in ink costs.

I'm sure there are better printers out there but the S800 is a bargain at between $279 and $299.
I am looking to buy a Good Printer and I would like to have all of
your suggestions on what is the BEST Printers on the Market? I want
beautiful Color Photo's large and small. What kinds of printer are
there? Ink jet, Laser, ect??

Thanks all.

What about 'dye-sub' printers?

I don't own one but from the reviews i have read the S800 is one of the best out there. In lab tests it outperformed Oly's $900 Dye Sub in picture quality. In the printers forum you'll see a link called an Inkjet trashes the Oly P400 which has the link to that review. LOL I started that thread and it caused quite a rukus to say the least.

Consumer reports just came out and rated the HP1215, 952, 932 and another HP the top 4 inkjets when it comes to picture quality. I own the 952 and couldn't really ask for better prints. However, if i were to buy now i would go after the S800. The main reason being refilling ink cartridges is a breeze with that printer and i think consumner reports blew it. Just my opinion.

You will get a lot of "Epson is the best" comments for this question...and while I agree they do make great photos..I HATE the printer and am going to replace it with an HP. Most likely the HP1215. I believe the HP 1000 is about the same w/o the double sided printing built in. :)

I have the HP P1000 and it prints very well. I printed some 5X7s and they looked just as good as if they were done at a photofinisher lab.

Bobby,

I have the HP P1000 and really like it. I have not checked prices for the best buy, but I was on HP's site the other day and they are selling the printer for $199.00. The HP prints on any photo paper, prints beautiful prints in a short period of time, and is very conservative on ink usage. Staples frequently has their ink refills on sale in "double packs."

One thing I really like about the HP is the USB connection and the ability to use the printer as a card reader. You know it will read both smart media and compact flash cards. The interface is seamless. You put your card in the side of the printer, press the save button, and a box appears on your computer desktop asking you if you want to save these photos. Click yes and away you go, very rapid downloading of your photos without all of those camera to computer connections.

Finally, the HP PhotoPrinting software is excellent, exceeding simple to use, and will print using standard templates or customizable templates for your printing needs.

I'm a very critical consumer and do not offer may compliments, but I think the P1000, at $199.00 is a BEST BUY.

Good luck and let us see some of your pictures.

I really don't think you could go wrong with Epson Photo stylus 1270 which you can get now heavily discounted between $250 -300 and it was $499 last year. I know, I bought one at the latter price. It has more than paid for itself over the past year as I have sold prints up to 13x17 for hundreds of dollars. The print quality is exceptional and if you use the right papers, you can get prints with archival properites and beauty to match and you can print all the way up to 16x20. No, I am not a shill for Epson but I have used their printers exclusively for photo printing for the past 3 years. As I'm writing this, I'm printing an 8x10 portrait on Marshall's inkjet canvas which I will then handcolor. The only reason not to get the 1270 would be to get the 1280 (only advantage is borderless prints) or the 2000P (different inks - up to 200 years before noticeable fade).

I have the Epson 890 and am very happy with the print quality. However, judging from recent reviews, I would now buy the Canon Bubble Jet S800.

I would recommend Sony DPP-SV55 dye-sub printer. I would never go back to inkjet printer to print my photos. No need to buy any ink cartridges. The photo quality is as close as you can get to the regular 35 mm print. No dots like regular inkjet prints. The color is very beautify very

close to the original on screen. I bought it at $299.00 at 2buystor.com. Paper/ribbon (together in a box) a little expensive $19.95/25 prints. Only two print sizes : 4"x6", 3"x4"

my be digital proto service might be a better choice. ofoto.com or dotphoto.com

Good luck!

I have to agree with Kevin Cantrell(who seems to be a fellow Nashvillian); I, however, have the Canon S600 which is $100.00 cheaper. The difference? The 600 has one less ink tank, but according to the Canon Tech guys, they prefer the 600, claiming that it's their favorite model--"simple, never breaks, OUTSTANDING output". Everyone who sees my photos is amazed at their quality; I had done a tremendous amount of research, ended up with 600. Also, ink tank replacement is cheap($10-13.00) and easy.

I've seen that Cannon is introducing the S630 in September. It may not be the ultimate in photo printing, but it would appear to be a decent compromise if you do a fair amount of text too. My laser just died and I'm in the market for a good all round printer, as 90% of what I do is text, but the occasional photo from my 2100UZ just has to be printed!

Bobby,
I recently purchased the HP 1218 photo smart printer. I am extremely impressed with the picture quality. It accepts smart media, compact flash, and IBM Microdrive cards on the side so you don't have to drain your camera batteries! It is very easy to use and will also print double sided when using as a regular printer. I stick the card in and print the pictures I want printed and upload what I want saved to the computer. It is a bit pricey but I feel it was worth it!

Good Luck and Happy Shopping!!!

Is that $10-13 for each color tank? If so, that must make it very expensive to run.

My Epson 870 has a single 5 color tank and a black tank (which is larger). I've found that the 5 inks generally run out at about the same rate when printing photos. The printer is used almost exclusively for photos. A 5 color ink tank costs about $14-19. I can get about 25 8x10s out of one 5 color ink tank. I can get about 4-5 color ink tanks to each black tank.

I could see if I were printing a lot of charts and graphics that had a lot of the same color where the single tank Canon would be more economical.

ohn

Yeah John, that is 10-13 dollars for each color tank. I print almost exclusively 8x10 highest quality on photopaperpro by canon, and find that I get anywhere from 50-75 prints, easily, before changing individual tanks. My Magenta and Yellow tanks seem to go quicker than my Cyan, and I've never changed my black cartridge. This thing spits out full-color 8x10's in anywhere from 40-90 secs depending on resolution; I haven't found it to be at all expensive, especially compared to ink usage in HP's and others (from what I've read).

Take care--

I took a trip down to the local computer store a couple months back in Japan to look at printers. I would say that over all price/quality the HPs have it. But for photo finishing the display prints on the newest Epsons were flawless. I can not say that for Cannon or HP or the Epson 700 series. If you look at a photo that has a large area mostly made up of a uniform color, you can typically see individual dots, if you look realy close. I could see them on the HPs, on the Cannons and on the cheaper Epsons, but I could not find any hint on the newer models.f

But truth told, I don't print out that many photos. I print a lot more reports and cards and things of that nature that don't require photo quality. Therefor I go with an HP and have the photos done at a lab. I think if you are a professional and can make money at it, the Epson is a fine way to go.

Thanks for the info, I went to BesyBuy today to buy a Canon S800 but they didn't have any, so I got the S600, I just printed my first photo with it and printed the same photo with my HP P1000, the S600, printed the BEST picture :) Thanks Again.
