Open_Opinion_Poll_on the Canon 350D XT

Hi Daniella,

I did use RAW, but the previous sunrise I did as well and could not gain the details in the shadows as well as i would like, so I worked on the levels in PS to bring the details out in the shadows. I have not used the raw conversion much but it looks like a perfect start the PP prosess. Maybe I was not doing it right but the exposure adjustment did not seem selective enough with the RAW converter, Like using brightness or contrast.

thanks very much John, Great info. I will give Daniellas settings a try as well as I do prefer to PP most images.

hope no one minds me adding my two peneth in , being a noob and all.

I have just moved to the 350d from a fuji s7000 and love the xt so much already .

Image Quality........ smooooth

Intuitive Operation .......I think so

Build Quality ..... poor , but i knew that before , and bought one anyway

What is your top complaint about this camera ? nothing that bothers me to complain about

And what do LOVE about this camera ? Its so fast !!!! & just about everything

Sharp 11x15 prints, haven't printed anything bigger yet.

Very easy to use for me... the people complaining about having to hit one extra 'Set' button are way, way too picky.

Build quality is great for me. Who cares if it's metal or plastic on the outside... metal dents easier. Besides, it's got a steel chassis inside where it counts. Mine got dropped once on the top at the flash by a friend onto concrete from slightly above waist height and it works perfectly still.

Top complaint is a lack of an AF Assist light on the camera body. Seizure flash is annoying. Other than that, I have zero complaints.

Speed, speed, speed. It doesn't have the fps rate of a 20D, but other than that, everything about this camera is fast... 3fps, huge buffer - bigger than what Canon publishes, menus, settings, etc. I also like that I can go really small without the battery/vertical grip and with the 50mm 1.8 lens if I want... or I can attach a zoom lens and the grip and have a larger, more balanced camera. Having the choice is better than not having it.
I already have read a-ton of reviews on this camera. So what do you
guys who really own a 350D and use it ay in day out, think of this
camera ? I think I would value your opinions more than some of
these reviews I've been reading. Are you happy with your camera ?
Hiting on the most importat points such as:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Image Quality (large prints 13x19 - 24x36) ? (Soft or Sharp /
Dynamic Range)

Intuitive Operation - EZ 2 use ?

Build Quality ? (well @ this price who can complain really ?)

What is your top complaint about this camera ?

And what do LOVE about this camera ?

if you have a flash liek the 420ex, you have a nice IR assisted focus, nothing disturbing.

ain't that nice that Canon went very conservative for the camera specs? I can get 6 RAW instead of 4 and I can get anything between 25 to 50 jpg 8mp fine large in a burst!

I had an olympus camedia c1000L it took very good digital pictures and was under a million pixels, yet i couldnt beleive the a4 prints i got and even the odd A3 did not look shabby. I was however bitterly dissapointed with its speed, the auto focus was so laid back it must have been on ganja! writing to the card took as long as me writing to my aunt Hilda! and 7 years ago it was state of the art AND cost as much as the 350D does now.

When i decided to upgrade i read all the reviews, Nikon, Canon and pentax. I really wanted a Pentax cos I used to have a spotmatic and i loved it to bits. But i read a few reviews and decided on a Nikon, so i read a few reviews and decided on a canon 350D.I got very frustrated with reviews, every time I read one it changed my mind.

In the end i went to a local Camera shop, and they let me hold each one, the pentax i really wanted to like but the reviews didnt like the jpg quality, The nikon i thought was too big and the canon was just right (bit like the 3 bears this) and with the reviews being so good i went for it.
Do I regret it? Not on your life. its simply fanbloodytastic.

Excellent prints. Did not go beyond 11.7x16.5 though.
Intuitive Operation - EZ 2 use ?
Never opened the manual (still wrapped in plastic), but I had D60 before.
Build Quality ? (well @ this price who can complain really ?)
Very good, no problems so far. The finish does retain skin marks but it easily wipes of.
What is your top complaint about this camera ?
Speed of operation in review mode going from one picture to the next
And what do LOVE about this camera ?
Everything else. It's a wonderfully designed little product. It makes previous generation look like un finished products. And it's on par with 20D image quality wise (but it will take only 90% of the 20D shots).

But the flash still fires.

I have the 580EX, and I suppose I could always focus, switch to MF, turn off the flash, then take the shot....

But an AF assist light should be standard IMHO.

My burst rates are about the same too of course... very nice surprise... with an Extreme III card that camera seems to just keep on firing.

Actually I have just returned from a function where I bumped into another guy who was carrying a brand-new 350D. He said that he did not experience any AF problems. I persuaded him to let me try his camera. I loaded my own card and took around 40-50 shots. Magnifying through lcd appeared to indicate that it was indeed giving sharp pics (much shaper than mine). I will download the pics in the morning and check for sure.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Image Quality (large prints 13x19 - 24x36) ? (Soft or Sharp /

Fantastic, superb beyond a doubt.
Intuitive Operation - EZ 2 use ?
I'd have to say not bad, other than the fact that ISO isn't readily apparent.
Build Quality ? (well @ this price who can complain really ?)
When I read all of the positive comments in this thread about the build quality I am frankly stunned. I'd say at best it's fair. As far as actual build quality meaning how it fits together it's fine. The finish seems cheap and plastiky. For everyone who says the build quality is good, go pick up a Maxxum 7D and compare it to your XT. Trust me here!
What is your top complaint about this camera
The unstable feel lack of balance caused by the grip which is too short. Pinky finger doesn't fit and is unable to grasp grip and must instead be used under the body to try and stabilize the camera. I may try the BG-E3 grip which will probably fix this problem but that is $150 and puts the price at $1000. To be fair I tried the camera before purchase and knew this was an issue and hope to be able to adapt to it.
And what do LOVE about this camera ?
Start up time, image quality, speed.
