What do you wear to shoot a wedding?

I sweat a lot, especially in church, when I take pictures. I always ask the client if he don't mind if I will wear jeans and T-shirt. Nobody asked me to wear some other cloths. Anyway, here in Romania, would be so weird to see a photographer in suit.

Hi Mark,

I usually wear a suit with a tie, but for most of the wedding season the jacket stays in the car. It's always on when first meeting the B+G on the day and when arriving at the church/registry office, as we believe first impressions count.

My wife will wear a simple pastel coloured dress, nothing that will clash with the bridesmaids or any colour theme running through the wedding (we always check this as part of out preparations,) and of course comfortable (but formal,) footwear.

We're now living and shooting in the UK but after 6 years working in Japan appreciate just how important general 'appearances' and 'first appearances' can be can be.

Good luck today.

Regards,

Nic.

2 eyes and a bunch of Canon L's with a 1DMK2 and 10D

I usually wear full suit and tie for the entire wedding. It's probably useful to note that I live in a city that remains fairly cool except for one or two weeks in the year when the temperature can go over 25degree centigrade. For the warmer days I have a cotton suit that works very well and looks professional while staying cool.

dress pants, in black, nice (comfortable) shoes, cream mandarin collar shirt (cotton) ... not as formal as the bridal party, but also not as casual as some of the guests... "professional on location"... I want to blend in, rather than stand out as the "outside influence"..

I've had a tailor made suit made, similar to tradional wedding morning dress.

This has been made to be especially lightweight and comfortable, and has pockets everywhere designed to take all the essentail bits of equipment that I need.

Tuxedo. It's the uniform. Nothing fancy and nothing expensive, but clean and if you make sure it fits well, it won't be at all uncomfortable. I keep a spare shirt & bow tie in the car too, just in case.

I usually wear grey (thin) slacks, black short sleeve shirt (button down), very dressy. My wife wears black pants and a black shirt with white pin strips.

We have been told at a few weddign to dress down. But that is our usual.

How much did that cost?

I wear slacks and shoes. However, I wear a really nice polo style shirt on which I pin a plastic name tag that gives my name and title of phtographer.

Also must be well groomed.

Works fine. Never had any negative comments.

Shot a wedding in a Unitarian Church a whilew back....

Should have worn a tye-dye rainbow T-Shirt...

Wedding and reception were a hoot...LOL

About a grand. Same as any tailor made suit.
I got some shirts and cravats made up as well.

Any professional tailor will make you something like that.

Ptetty simple to answer, really.

1. If it's a very formal wedding, bridal gown, gowned bridesmaids, groomsmen in tuxedos, flower girls and ringbearer dressed formally, a tuxedo is very suitable. Ask the bride!

2. If it's a totally cool and casual beach wedding with B&G and guests in swimsuits, then shorts and a golf shirt would probably be acceptable. I like to wear clothing having some pockets just to hold and carry stuff. Those beach weddings can be brutally hot in the summertime though!

3. When the bride is in formal wedding gown and groomsmen are in black suits, a dark suit (maybe navy blue) fits in very well. Or, you can wear navy blue slacks and a dark gray sport coat.

In general, keep your attire dark. Don't wear colorful jackets or ties. You want to blend into the background.

I've had people tell me, "we didn't even see you. Where were you when you took these pictures?" (Ususally pix of the actual ceremony, available light from behind and well off to the side of the minister.)

I thing it's good to remember that a man can rarely "overdress" if he wears a dark suit. You can get away with a dark suit even at a formal affair. Also, a suit gives you a degree of authority that helps a lot when setting up groups, etc.

hate suits and find them so uncomfortable. I have a wedding to do
today and am soooo tempted to dress down. But would not!
Dress like a well dressed male guest.

You have to be dressed to work, that is what you do.

Suits in hot weather will not be "suitable".... pun

Weddings on the beach are no good for a tux?
Hawaiian weddings don't require any formal dress either. Just
dress so you are comfortable and don't die from the heat and
so you can move as required.

Gotta wear a tux complete with all the extras. Cumberbun, bow tie, tails, top hat, white gloves, even a walking cane...

Make sure that cuff-links are used...no buttons on the sleeves!

When I do weddings I wear dark Lee jeans, dark shirt (not black), tie and sport coat. When the formal wedding ceremony is over the coat comes off.

Guess if I had to make my living as wedding photographer I would dress anyway I had to but then again maybe not. I can't handle suits so I guess I won't be a wedding photog fultime.
