Not played with it yet. Immeditate impressions is that this is not at all like standard Oly kit.

My camera is heavy and solid, my TCONs are heavy and solid. Even my printer is heavy and solid.

This? This is a cheap bit of plastic :-)

Sure it works wonders though, and that's all that counts, maybe.

Seb,

I believe that the FL40 should be mandatory for the E10. It makes it a different camera indoors. Also outdoors for fill it just shines (no pun intended). I am not thrilled with the plastic case for the money either. Regards, Matt

Hi Seb,

Ideally you need a stroboframe (Speedgraphic in Hampshire are the importers) and a Canon lead to really bring out the best in the FL40.

It positions the flashhead directly above the lens whether on a portrait or landscape shot. The Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer or Ultrabounce softens the light off beautifully on people pictures.

Have fun with the new toy!

Regards,

Richard

PS. How's the arm coming on?

Richard, I just got that setup yesterday. When you use the frame do you set the flash, up towards the ceiling if you have low ceilings or flash 75 degrees? I also have the pocket bouncer but I tend to use it only when I don't have low ceilings. Rich

It's SO good! Perfect exposure every time. Now my camera really IS idiot proof :-) Oh hold on, they're still out of focus :-D

Haven't looked at the manual yet - is it normal for the test/charge light to always be on?

Hi Rich,

With the Ultrabounce I just point straight at the subject. I find that it is so much softer. You also have the option of popping the internal flash up too.

A tiny bit of the bracket of the Canon cord has to come off to do this though. Exposure of the internal pop up is half of the FL40 so it opens the eyes up nicely.

If you do this when bouncing off the ceiling the lighting is very, very nice.

Hope this helps,

Richard

Hi Seb,

When shooting against the light outside I tend to up the output from the FL40 by up to 2 stops according to how bright it is. A few tests will tell you how much to do. Usually one stop is sufficient.

It certainly works for me.

Try af instead of manual focus! I have never had any problems at all with either of my E10s.

See ya,

Richard

I never thought that it was cheapy feeling. Actually the E-10 is heavy enough. I would not want a flash that was heavier.

my 2 cents

Seb - The light stays on when the flash is on and active (it sleeps with the camera). When it's flashing, the flash is charging.

Does anyone now what 2 do when makes a very loud clicking sound and d2 aspired on the panel.

I removed it from the camera and had to turn off to reset,

hen turned on off camera it seemed to work until you press T/W then the same noise and it locks up with d2 showing
Thanks

Hi, John,

Yes, what you are describing is a problem w/some FL40's. It is a small ribbon inside the zoom head portion that is interfering with the gear train of the zoom mechanism. It can be repaired at home if you have the heart and courage to pop the sides away from ea. other and then pop off the lens. It does not come apart easily, but when/if you do it, you will see the small ribbon and you can apply a small dab of glue to cement it to the roof of the shell. Regards, Jim N'AZ

This flash was originally designed for the C-2500L, not the E-10. There is a big, low light illuminator (for focusing) on the front of it that it doesn't even use with the E-10. As John said, its built of plastic, but its heavy enough. I have heard people complain that the weight and leverage of the big flash would slowly tear apart a 2500L. I never ran into that problem. I have found that it works great on both cameras.

Seb, I am missing something here? Exactly what material were you expecting the FL-40 to be made of ... cold-rolled cabaloid steel? This is the first reference I have ever heard of the words "Olympus" and "cheap" in the same sentence ... that is cheap in the inferior sense. The FL-40 is well up to the Olympus standard and I assure you it is the most awesome flash you have ever seen. Not many things in this world are fool proof, but the FL-40 comes close ... even takes care of the fool pushing the buttons most of the time. Cheers ... :-)
