They could be refurbished.
cameraworld.co.uk are advertising refurbished D2X at £2799.99 but you need to read the small (microscopic) print to get the full details, it says
"Our refurbished products have been returned to Nikon by dealers and in the majority of cases have never been used. Since being returned, the products have been carefully checked by Nikon technicians to ensure optimum operating performance.
Sold complete and boxed with usual accessories. Most are in AS NEW condition, with very few and extreemly minor signs of use. All have been thoroughly tested and come with a full 12-month garantee and in the unlikely event that it goes wrong in the first 14 days we will happily replace or refund as you wish."
i.e they are secondhand.

I have a 70-200 VR lens on order.
I spoke to Jessops this week and they have decided not to price match the internet anymore.
They told me of an incident at their Hedge-end Branch where they lost out on a £30,000 sale to LCE, so this policy might change again.
Microglobe I believe import their lenses and the 1 year warranty is offered by them, not Nikon

I had to return a faulty SB600 to Microglobe, it was about 6 months old.
They replaced it with a new one, so I have nothing but praise for them!

d2x is available in germany for 4094 EUR (2824 GBP) for some weeks.
and if the canon rumors are true it will fall down soon, just wait a month
until the end of ifa in berlin and all new toys become reality.
after that thank canon for lower prices and buy a nikon.
