Is this the end of the road for the optio family, as Pentax concentrates more on DSLRs, or will there be continued new top end models. If so, when would we expect to hear news of the next upgrade to the O450,550,555,750 line.

Brian

Perhaps we have to look the sales in each segment of the market.

The Optios 450..750 are rivals of the S30..s70, V1..V3, perhaps the G3..G6, so a deep review of the results of this segment could be provide us an understanding of the reasons of the Pentax behaviour.

It looks clear that Pentax doesn't have intentions to compete in the DSLR-like (828,A2....) so perhaps they believe that the action is in the very compact segment and obviusly in the DSLR segment, and since Pentax have less resources than Canon they have to choose, and the sacrified was this segment, very intensive in innovations but not so profitable.

My 2 cents...

Hey Brian

I tend to agree with what you say.

I think the 750Z was Pentax's last effort with the Optio 5x zoom camera range

I'm serious when I say it makes me sad :(

I have an FZ5 and will possibly upgrade that to the FZ30 and my eldest will have the FZ5.

However, I won't be trading the 750Z for aby reason. It will die in my hands.

I would like faster processing speed and faster mechincs. I would like better low light action and a better designed LCD. I would like a tougher lens cover.

However, none of that really worries me too much.

The Optio 450,555,750 (and the 550 with it's "noise") are still not matched and this from a camera (in the case of the 450/550) 2-3 years old. There are very few cameras of that vintage that have lasted so well.

Nice work Pentax but the Panasonic LX1 and it's daughters/sons are likely to be the replacement to the 750Z when it dies (unless the 850 arrives).

Maybe they can produce a compact camera without any compromise. If anyone can, it will be Pentax.

Yes, although I am not completely convinced on the LX1, it did make me look carefully, so maybe it could provide the evolution path to something great. It is let down by thickness a little, and loses resolution in 4:3 mode and gains no more zoom over the optio, plus noise is still a bit unknown.

Hu? The Optio SVi has 5x zoom too... but it seems not to be on sale in all countries... I wonder what happened with it, it should be on sale now.

Take care

There have been a lot of threads here about the deficiencies of the SV family, such as excessive jpg compression, slowness and corner sharpness, so I don't consider it to be a replacment for the 450 -750. -- yet!

Brian

The SV and SVi are certainly not n the class of the 450/550/555/750.

I see them as a poor effort by Pentax to extract value out of the 5X lens but without any success mainly becaue the innovation wasn't there

the SV and 750 are being closed out by Pentax to dealers now. If you want one better buy quick. Hate to see them go.
thanks

it should have

1. better focus speed ...

2. support anti-shake / high ISO

3. better nosie cotrol .

4 .manual twist-barrel zoom control.

1. better focus speed ...
I can deal with what I have in the 750Z but I have 7mp to play with so in low light I can zoom back and enjoy the faster AF
2. support anti-shake / high ISO
I don't need IS in the 5X, never had an issue with shake but higher ISO might be useful in the few times I need it
3. better nosie cotrol .
I have never really had issue with my 450 or 750Z wrt "noise". I prefer less "noise control" in camera.
4 .manual twist-barrel zoom control.
I'd prefer faster electronic zoom. Adding manual twist would IMO make the camera a larger form factor and I like it smaller

With the flip and twist LCD, make the hinge internal and not external and allow the LCD size to be increased.

Allow optical zoom and exposure and AF control in video

A few others but I'm getting really picky now

Still plenty (750Z) on sale here and the 750Z is still quite popular according to Paxtons.

The SV seems to have been a backwards step so not surprised it is being closed out.

The 750Z have not been widely available in the market (Hong Kong) since April. I think this is a great camera but bad marketing. Pentax has come out too many models within a very short period of time of very similar function, which confused customers who never know or use a Pentax before.

Given it's over a year old and sales have been excellent, not suprised it's slowing down now.

Most cameras only really sell for the first 6 months of release these days and in a few cases, less than that

Such is the volatile DC market we see today

-whatever happend to the SVi, announced but never seen?

In view of Pentax's announcement that they are reducing emphasis on compact cams, maybe they realise that just a cosmetic upgrade of the SV is not enough. I wonder whether this one will ever happen.

I hope Pentax will go on making small cams. But I hope they will not splatter the market with confusing and indistinguishable models.

Thet are for sale here in Sydney

About $AU 490
Hi wazza - that's interesting: never seen one here in Singapore. Lets see if the changes are purely cosmetic - spec-wise the SV is an attractive camera but according to the reviews never quite delivered.

I doubt there is much change but we can always live in hope ;)

The SV for some reason was a failure by Pentax - it happens.

I am just surprised they didn't put their attention of issues identified by users of the Optio range

ie slow performance (shot to shot, AF low light, startup, zoom etc)

I feel they tried to address many issues in the 750Z but they took the shine off it by not addressing the common issues I mention before

Even Pentax-haters agree that the SMC 5x lens is a class leader so I was hoping that Pentax might make use of that in future releases. Looks like that may never happen now
