E-1 discontinued?

I saw a reliable report this morning that Olympus America has just discontinued the E-1 kit with the 14-54 lens. It is not clear if it's the kit or if the E-1 itself that has been discontinued.

If this is true, perhaps the E-3 announcement isn't too far off.

Can anyone confirm? Mr. Porter??

I saw it in a message from an small Olympus dealer (in volume, not height), who shall remain nameless in case the information cannot be verified.

I heard the same thing on an OM mailing list. Reliable source. Perhaps the same reliable source.

It's no surprise really. Surely Olympus hasn't been making E-1 bodies for quite some time.

True, and this rumor of the "new" E- whatever has been ongoing since last winter. These forums are like a bus stop ..... a new rider stops by every day with a rumor of "the new body(s). Those who spend time at the bus stop hear the same rumor over and over again :)

It is not unknown for a dealer to say "xyz is discontinued", when the reality of the situation is often "I don't have xyz in stock right now, please consider uvw or abc, which I do have in stock or I get a better commission on".

Not in this case. The report from Olympus America is "discontinued and sold out." The source I referred to orders from them as-needed and does not stock the cameras.

I seem to remeber posting on here that a new oly was expected
sometime in the fall, maybe September
This "rumor" originated from me. My source said to expect announcement of a new flagship E body around August 15, which is two weeks from now, so we'll see soon enough.

BTW, it's interesting how Olympus admitted releasing "too little, too late", and still, instead of changing their workflow, they're firing people. Honestly, this looks like bad strategy, as I can't see how they'll work faster if they cut their workforce in half. If it were my company, I'd try to optimize things, not "cut expenses". Cutting expenses is a shortsighted, short-term strategy that feels more like suicide than optimization - appeasing the shareholders instead of building the future.

At least for E-1 owners, I say get them while you can. You might not be able to afford the next ugrade for a pro-level body.

I hope something does get announced soon because I hate the digital-driven upgrade pressure.

I'm not able to find the E1 at my local dealer. He's unsure of whether he'll be getting more in. Is this confirmed?

. . . . in stature, but had a small volume . . . meaning he wuz
really skinny ?
No, he just wasn't very loud!

UPDATE: apparently it was the E-1 kit with the 14-54 lens that is discontinued and sold out at Olympus America. There are apparently still a few E-1 bodies in the warehouse, but the remaining supply isn't large. So what is on the dealer shelves around the USA is basically all that's left.

That has been my guess since Olympus announced the new F2 zooms. They just wouldn't ship those lenses this fall without an announcement on a new flagship body.

Olympus are fools if they release only one body and that body is signifcantly more expense than the E-1 was initially. They need to sell bodies in order to sell lenses. People interested in the new f2 zooms aren't going to want to put them on an E-300, and they can't put them on a camera they can't afford. Now, if I'm right I bet there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth because it's isn't 12MP, 8 FPS, with class leading noise even if that means people can actually afford it.

Scott
