I recently purchased an S85. Can anyone tell me if there is a significant difference between the Sony 2x telephoto and the Tiffen 2x telephoto in image quality or function? Thanks

I had the same question. I know own both but am in the process of sending the Sony back. I like the Tiffen much better. It's smaller, lighter and seems to work just as well as the Sony. It was $69.99 at Circuit City.

I didn't know Sony made a 2x telephoto for the CyberShots. Can you tell us what model Sony & Tiffen lenses you're using?

I believe the Sony lens is VCL R2052 and it is $54.99 and you need an adapter VAD-S70 $29.99 at etronics.com. The Tiffen lens is the Megaplus 2x, $70 at Circuit City, and you also need an adapter about $10 at Circuit City.

Don't waste your time with the Sony 2X It's meant to be used on their camcorders which don't require such precise optics as the S75 / S85.

I have tried the Sony and the Tiffen, the Tiffen is the one I bought and the performance is superb,(must be used at full zoom or vignetting occurs) you will need also to buy the Tiffen lens adapter as the Sony one is 52mm and the Tiffen requires 43mm.

The Tiffen adapter is black and looks realy great on the S85 used with a 43mm UV filter the adapter can be left on as a lens pprotector.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards.

Have you tried the Oly B300 or the TC-14B--both exceptionally better glass than either the Sony of the Tiffen, but 3 times the price.

Why degrade your images with cheap glass.

Papatrout,

No, i've not compaired either of the above mentioned lenses on a Sony S75 or S85, Have you ? if so was the image quality difference worth the price difference ?

By the way I did not consider £90 for a lens particularly cheap, if the Oly B300 is 3 times that price I would not even consider it as the Tiffen gives a result good enough for my requirement.

Kind regards.

I can vouch for what BrianF is saying. I bought the Tiffen 2x lens and adaper ring for my Sony S75 and found that it works very acceptable well with it. I imagine therefore it will work just the same for the S85 since they use the same lens.

However the Tiffen 2X lens does not make such a perfect match with my F505V camera. I can use it on the F505V but it produces severe vignetting around the 4 corners of the pic. If you only need what's in the middle focus of the pics (on the F505V) then it is useable too. Like I just did that tonight experimenting with taking some moon shots with the Tiffen 2x lens mounted onto my F505V. You can see the moon shots (If you like) at my F505V imagestation gallery at:

You will need to view the moon shots full sized enlarged to make out the moon crater details.

Willyee:

Just finished looking at your moon shots with the Tiffen 2x on your F505V. Most impressive. The night sky takes care of the vignetting perfectly, don't you agree?

I'm really happy with my Tiffen lenses for my S75. I own both the WA and the 2x Tele, as well as both of their close-up lens kits (+10 & +7, as well as the +1, +2, +4).

My next purchase just might well be the Raynox close-up lenses for the Sony cameras. You can find them at http://www.raynox.com , and can purchase them at http://www.digitaletc.com . The Raynox line might also present a good alternative to those on the lookout for a telephoto, but aren't quite pleased with the Tiffen or the Sony. Given how the Olympus B300 is gone (no longer sold), options are what we all want, right?

Anyway, great shots of the moon. Really spectacular!

I just purchased the Tiffen 2x today but I'm having problems with the focus, do you know what the minimum focus distance is for the 2x? It seems like I can't get a reliable focus under about 10 feet. Could this be a conflict between the focus sensor and the Tiffen 2x? Thanks for the info.

Ron:

The little Tiffen manual that came with your conversion lens informs you that the 2x Tele will effectively double the minimum focus distance (at full tele) of your camera. Can't seem to find my S75 manual, but based on the information you've found, then at 10' the minimum focus distance for the S75 at full tele w/o the conversion lens would be 5'. Sounds about right.

Good luck and best regards.

Your findings, by the way, seem to be in line with mine. Don't fret, though, just take the telephoto lens off.

Good luck and happy shooting.

Yes indeed Mike M. The night sky totally hides the vignetting that one would normally see with the F505V and this Tiffen 2x lens. With my S75 and Tiffen lens however, the vignetting is nowhere near as bad or obvious in most pics. BTW, I just came back in from trying more shot of the moon with the F505V again. The moon was just about setting over the horizon and larger looking so I figured I'd try some more pics of it... however now it was so dark out (about 11:00pm'ish EST here) that I could not set the manual white balance of the 505V. So I used auto WB and the moon came out whiter. Anyway, did not get as manu good in focus shots this round, but I posted one more at my gallery if anyone wants to see it. It looks basically the same size except the moon is more tilted on an angle than earlier this evening.

Glad you liked the shots. Nothing great but it was to show what extent of capability of zoom one can obtain from this setup.

Hi Ron,

Sounds daft but try macro! mode i can get great focus on objects much less than 10' with the Tiffen 2X fited, i use it regular for close ups of bugs without getting too close to disturb them.

Kind Regards.
