A while back I took a pic of a couple of egrets. A girlfriend of mine saw the pic while she was visiting with me and said she really liked it - this was the pic she saw:

Now, her birthday is coming up and I am gong to give her a framed A4 print of the egrets. I decided to see if I could redo the PP as I wasn't too happy with the original attempt - this is the result:

I'd really appreciate some opinions as to which one I should send her (can't ask her cos its a surprise).

Opinion only, the first one is much more pleasing to the eye. The highlights in the second one are blown to the point of being painful. I would run the first one through noiseware and take care of some of the color noise and add a little unsharp mask. Nice photo BTW.

Maybe try converting it to B&W and see how it looks.

I'm not just trying to throw a coin in the works but I really prefer the second one. The first is 'technically' better but I would much prefer to frame the second and hang it on my wall. It reminds me of a painting or an artists study sketch. Really like the way the water is blown to the extent that you can only make out the detail under the shadow of the wings (surely that has some romantic allusion?)

Have you tried printing samples of the two?

I like the first one better, but more importantly, your girlfriend liked the first one, so why mess with it?

Yep and framed them both - the first in a plain pine frame the second in a pale blue frame - both look great - the first has more impact but the second has a more of a haunting, romantic look to it.

I was going to send her the second but you lot have got me all confused as most of you perfer the first - I suspect your all male - I wonder what the females think :)

  1. 2 is much better IMO. The high-key rendering makes it very artsy and very feminine. The first one looks dirty by comparison.

That as long as you give her one, she's be happy ??

On a serious note (;-) I'd say number one, BUT with some soft focus portrait PP stuff done to it.

I used to have a great set of procedures to get this effect, but I'm buggered if I can remember how!

Something like make a layer copy, invert it, b&W it, some strange thing like neon glow, invert it back, alter opacity of layer ....... phew .... I really should write these down.

I've just about got past matering the zoom tool so it could take me a while to get used to the finer points of photoshop - I've got a slow learning curve due to too much Brains (welsh joke).

Thanks for the advice everyone my head is spinning:) jebir says to give her both but I like Big Ga's train of thought best and just give her one - I know she'll love it;)

What I'll do is to give her the one she's seen for her birthday then give her the high key one for Xmas - I've got a few more in the series waiting the PP treatment - should keep her happy for a couple of years LOL!

Thanks again guys.

Sounds like you've got a plan. But just for the record, I agree with Jim Pilcher -- I think the high key effect of the second one gives it more visual impact and is an more artistic rendering of the image. I love to see it hanging on my wall -- it I had any room!

God Bless,
Greg
