design the ugliest looking digital camera to date? I honestly don't understanding what they are doing - except perhaps accelerating towards the edge of a large cliff.

I don't really care what my camera looks like, I care more about what the images look like that come out of the camera.

These two cameras offer some very unique features not seen in any other non DSLR cameras to date

I will watch with great interest as they get used and reviewed and that is from a Kodak non-fan !

Great stuff Kodak - innovation - bring it on.

I have just re-read the press release and I can't find anything particularly unique about this camera (apart from its appearance). Unless it has a bigger sensor with reduced noise at high ISO (something Kodak haven't been very good at), then it will be now competition for the current prosumer cameras - e.g Panasonics FZ30, Fuji's S9000 etc.

There are two cameras in the news item btw.

Read it again - maybe you are so blinded by your one eyed approach based on it's "looks"

I'll let you have a think....

Kodak is pulling a coup. Watch this category for all the people who want a DSLR but not the cost or complication. This has been tried by Oly and Sony as well as others but if it is made simple enough- which Kodak has shown they can do- and with the Kodak name which consumers like - then they will sell a pile of these.

Well seeingas there are no specifications yet or sample images, I can only comment on its poor looks - which probably equates to poor ergonomics. Although I may be jumping the gun here. It DOES have a cyclops look about it though.

What? Better video capture? IS - quite a few cameras have that. The "unique" Kodak system.....

So will I.

Well you have to admire their courage in bringing out something like this - whether its genius or folly only time and the market will tell. The shape initially made me think of the Mamiya ZD.... but like some other oddballs in the arena, eg. the Olympus E300 and the Samsung monster, there's a difference betweeen looking weird because form follows function, and just looking weird because of a styling aberration.

I suspect, very sadly, that its market will be limited, as the people who it suits best will not take it seriously because it says Kodak, not Canon, on the front. Its certainly not a compact, and whatever its positive attributes, it doesnt have the TTL optical viewfinder or interchangeable lenses to really compete with bottom end DSLRs.

Why so bitter ? Cheer up man.

I enjoy seeing companies trying innovation. If it fails I don't care as I have no financial interest in them

24 mm wide angle lens
Record RAW files and include a hot shoe
KODAK P20 Zoom Flash
PC sync port for off-camera flash options

VGA video at 30 frames per second (Motion JPEG compression) with the unique ability Use full optical zoom
Cut, splice and merge clips on the camera
RAW file and uniquely embeds a dynamic JPEG

2.5-inch, high-resolution LCD; a 237,000 pixel electronic viewfinder with diopter
556 g and 4.6W x 3.8H x 3.6D in

At the price point many want priced at $599 and $499

A great idea from Kodak. These cameras get around he problem they had staying in the full-blown DSLR market, namely lens mounts, and a lack of control over the bodies they could use. These new cameras come as close to full blown dslrs as you can get without having to go to the cost and expense of designing a full lens range to go with an interchangeable lens mount system.

Great value for money.

If all you can do is spit out your dummy, then why bother commenting.

I am thinking...... of not buying one of these. $599 gets a good DSLR with kit lens, or a very good Sony/Panasonic/Fuji/Canon etc. I really hope that underneath the skin Kodak have a brilliantly designed camera - but based on past experience, I doubt it. Lets see what the reviews bring.

I'm not impressed with Kodak camera's normally but these two do catch my eye

I'm not bitter at all. I'm just skeptical.

Fair enough. It was a wise-crack that you obviously took seriously.
24 mm wide angle lens
That's a good start.
Record RAW files and include a hot shoe
Depends on the buffer size whether RAW will be usable in the real world. Panasonic FZ30 does RAW too and has a hotshoe.
KODAK P20 Zoom Flash
Nice. Canon/Olympus/Nikon/Minolta all make dedicated flashguns that support this too.
PC sync port for off-camera flash options
Use and IR trigger or hotshoe adapter. Not a deal breaker.
VGA video at 30 frames per second (Motion JPEG compression) with
the unique ability Use full optical zoom
Cut, splice and merge clips on the camera
Buy a video camera.
RAW file and uniquely embeds a dynamic JPEG
2.5-inch, high-resolution LCD; a 237,000 pixel electronic
viewfinder with diopter
Electronic viewfinder. All it is a very high resolution one.
556 g and 4.6W x 3.8H x 3.6D in

At the price point many want priced at $599 and $499
Tons of competition at this price point. I think it will struggle.

Be skeptical - I am too but don't attack me.

I agree some (some) of those features are in other cameras but there are some unique features.

You make comment about buy a video camera - many want this feature and full optical zoom at this res is great and very new

The wide angle is great
'
A high res EVF is great in a non DSLR (a must have for me in this type of cam)

Yes, the FZ30 has some of these features as do other cameras but not at this weight/size/price

Kodak needs to deliver on the camera now. Be skeptical but for gods sake appreciate the attempt at innovation

24mm makes it desirable to me, I just hope its of decent quality, and im glad to see a proper zoom ring. It does look kind of freeky ugly though. But Im not going to dismiss it on stooopid looks or lack of brand cache.

Precisely. Its the whole package that impresses. Provided the image quality lives up to expectations, then the P880 at least should take custmers away from the entry level Canons and Nikons etc. The P850 lacks a little in the resolution department.

One thing I can't recall seeing mentioned is macro. I hope there is a macro facility. could be important.

.. for a camera.

I could have sworn cameras were for taking pictures, not for using as fashion accessories.
