best way to transfer pics from D70 to computer?

What is the best way to transfer pics from my D70 to my computer? Should I use the transfer cable and take the pics directly from the camera? Should I take out the card and put it in a card reader? Which way is best as far as wear and tear on the camera? Or maybe it doesn't make a difference?

...but I recommend a card reader to preserve battery power on the camera. Additionally, if you have a USB 2.0 port and a USB 2.0 card reader, it will download a LOT faster.

And finally, Nikon View's Nikon Transfer works with card readers as well

They make these cool card readers that actually mount into the computer case similar to how a floppy drive is mounted. The one I have is a 6 in 1 so it will read from:
Memory Stick
Compact Flash I & II
Microdrive (sames as CF)
Smart Media
SD card
USB Flash Drive

Its cool cause I can just plug the card in like a floppy and it pops up on screen. The downside is it takes up 6 drive letters in explorer so along with my 4 hard drives, DVD Burner, and floppy I have drive letters all the way out to "N" drive. My wife will ask, "hey where is that file I had asked you to save for me" and I will say, hmmm I think its in M:\Temp\Stuff, or else it is in N:\To Burn.
Anyways, the card reader works well

use a card reader
most computers have built in card readers anyways and some
recent lcds have them too ( like the latest Dells ).
USB 2.0 Hi-speed is very fast (480Mbits/second)
USB 2.0 Ful- speed is not (12Mbits/second)

Card reader is cheap, widely available, convenience, battery-saving and wait for the it...FAASSST!

Yes, I guess that using a card reader will not drain your batteries as it happened to me... Once I forgot to remove and turn off the camera from the PC and few hours later the camera battery was almost empty, I noticed that the PC periodically accesses the CF card on the camera

That is, the D70/s batteries are drained when the camera is connected to a PC via USB for a long period.. and downloading a 2GB card full of pictures take a loooooooong time.

Definitely, I'm getting a USB 2.0 High-Speed card reader.. but...

... is there a card reader that we should avoid?

Just go for any reader with USB 2.0 support and there are plenty 5-in-1 or 8-in-1 card readers or even 15-in-1 to support wider range of memory cards.

It is a must-have, regardless of what camera you have and it doesn't need any driver for Windows XP so you can upload or view your photos in yours or friend's pc.

--Name the drives. That makes it easier. In Explorer, Right Click on the drive, and select "Rename".

I've partioned my hard disk so it looks like C:, D:, K:, L:, M:, N:, & O;. But in WINDOWS Explorer, the show up as:

E: thru J: are DVD, CD, and camera card slots

Guess where the photography files are.

My favorite is a FireWire card reader; a bit more expensive than USB 1.1 or even USB 2.0 but if you have a Mac, this is the way to go.
