The best (and only!) I've found is the Olympus 3040Z with the PT007 housing. Which regions is that can you get that in? I'm trying to find it without much luck.

Is there anyway to make the 4040 work underwater? I'd rather get a 4.1mpixel camera if possible.

Does Olympus have any competion at all? I can't find any others...

Remy,

Try http://www.oceanbrite.com they have the pt0xx housings available. I know oly is coming out with the pt010 housing which will fit the 3000 to the 4040 series. Don't know when it will be out..

Canon and Sony also offer various models with manufacturers housings. Personally I've got the 3040 / 007 combination and it works like a dream ! Mistakenly took it to 42M - no problem at all ! Only downsid, if you are into macro (and I'm sure you will be), is that the focusing distance is still way too far away for some of the 'photos I wanted to take (8") whereas the Nikon focuses to 2" (Perfect !) for the real detail you will want. So if anyone at Olympus reads this - please give us REAL macro ! BTW is there anyone out there who knows how I can fix this without foregoing the usefulness of the wider angles for Shark / Coral / etc. etc. ?
Finally, try wetpixel.com or underwaterphotography.com for an expert opinion !
Good luck !

I have read on one of the threads in this forum that Ewa-Marine (I think a German company) makes underwater enclosures that will fit nearly any digital camera. B&H Photo carries several of their models. I'm thinking about the DCAM model for my Oly 2100UZ but would like to hear from anybody else who's tried the Ewa-Marine enclosures as to what their experiences have been.

Take a look at http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/olymp_d360.html

It looks pretty serious..

Yes. INON makes an underwater-detachable (and attachable) closeup lens for the housing. I just bought one, along with their wide-angle lens and both are quality pieces of glass. Marine Camera Distributors (the link below) sells them in the US.

The same housing will work with either the 3040 or the 4040. They have the same case and button layout. Olympus has a newer housing, the PT-010 for these cameras. You can buy it at http://www.japan-direct.com , or go to http://www.steves-digicams.com . They have a whole page of links to people who sell underwater housings. The PT-010 has a thicker o-ring than the 007.

Buying from japan-direct is a little scary, because you have to wire them the $ before they will send you the case. It can also take a while, and you have to follow their directions exactly (place the order on their web site, get an email confirming the price with shipping, wire them the $, reply to the previous email so they know you sent the $, then wait...).

I just got mine. It came with a japanese manual, but japan-direct has an english version on their web site. Now all I have to do is wait for my backordered 3040 to come in ($649 @ http://www.pictureline.com ).

How do you like the wide angle lens? Is there any vignetting? Do you have any examples of pics. Is the close up a macro? Any eg pics. Thanks considering getting these add on lenses...

You might try Light and Motion http://www.lmindustries.com . They make a custom housing for the 3040 which I understand also works with the new 4040.

Try http://www.uwimaging.com . This is the Light and Motion site. They produce a housing for the Olympus digital cameras which include the 4040. The quality of this housing is, in my opiniion, second to NONE. Outstanding product!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy.

Very nice housing but for the cost of the housing you could have a camera, pt0xx housing, strobe, tray and arms. Don't think its worth it IMHO.

Hi there.

Walt, you have made this comment in two discussions. What is so scary about sending the money before shipment? Is there any domestic seller that will ship goods before payment? Not trying to start a flame war, but I don't get it. Randy at Japan Direct seems to me to be a very up front kind of guy. All of my dealings with him have been very professional, and shipping time is as good as domestic.

When you buy using a credit card, if you get billed but don't get the product, you have some recourse: you can contest the charge with your credit card company. When you wire funds, you're sending cash. Maybe I'm just paranoid :)

You're right, though. Randy is very professional and does what he says he will. Working with him was as good an experience as any I've had on the Internet, and better than many. I was just trying to describe my feelings during the transaction, and not trying to knock Randy or Japan Direct in any way.
