Panasonic LX1 is *NEWS*

wait, are you saying fuji doesn't have a dslr?
Panasonic has at least 2-3 winners here.
As has been said (here) a number of times: manufacturers that don't
(yet) have a DSLR offering, now have to bring more to the table.
This is proof. I'm sure Fuji, Casio (and maybe Sony a.o.) will
follow.

I looked at Simon's samples gallery, and I can't help being really impressed. Excellent resolution all the way to the corners, great highlight retention even in the bright sunlight shots, great shadow detail, very artifact-free images, very "information-dense" images -- none of the blobbiness I'm used to seeing in most 7-8 MP digicams these days. Looks like a whole new generation of machine.

Agree. I printed off a few at A4 on my i850 and they are superb.

Isn't this a pre production camera ?

One poster complained about the noise at ISO400 (blue sky) but when I printed the image it was very good.

The 16:9 is sweet

Almost enough to make me move from my Optio 750Z

I printed the images at A4 - guess what awesome.

I don't know what images you were looking at.

As you said, pre production with NR to come.

Up against the F10 at ISO400 only slightly worse

I too have printed out the ISO400 image and it's absolutely appalling!

Seriously are we looking at different images?

My monitor is fine - and I agree that some of the other images are ok (but just ok) there's still far too much noise in the skies for ISO80

The fall off and clarity around the edges is poor and the noise is
incredible!
Hmmm .. the noise at ISO 80 is very low ... the noise at ISO 400 is clearly evident at 100% ... just as it normally is in small sensor cameras.

The fall off and clarity at the edges? hmmmm ... can't see any problems. Most wide angle photos are much worse - at least if you have a zoom. Seems to be a lens of very high quality.

These are pre-production samples - the final quality may change. I'll add a note to the story

For anyone who has had some experience of excessively noisy images these samples are impressive. If you examine them at high screen magnifications then yes you will see some noise at higher ISOs but this can be easily dealt with & any prints will be very acceptable.

I agree with Petteri - we are beginning to see a new generation of digital cameras. This is the reward for the patient amongst us - they just keep getting better.

OK, granted - noise at ISO400 is to be expected it just seems extreme to me.
Compare Canon Pro1 2/3" sensor at ISO400:

with Panasonic LX1 1/1.65" sensor at ISO400

Also compare the Pro1 ISO50 with the Panasonic LX1 ISO80.

YES - I realise they are not the most comparable cameras - I've just been searching for some photos that have the ISO listed rather than Auto. The Pro1 has a similar sensor area and pixel count.

I would have liked to post sample 100% crops but I'm not sure how? Any help for future?

Hi Simon

Thank you so much for posting those images

When can you give us a pre review of the camera in use ? I'm an owner of an Optio 750Z and prior to that an Optio 450. I'm looking at the LX1 and it's children as the next step given Pentax seems to have lost the plot with new cameras

ps. I still think the original 750Z review here had a faulty camera :) I just don't see the issues raised

Again, this is a preproduction model! So all the samples are only for reference, not for serious comparison with other final production models!

I found the LX1 a really enjoyable camera to use (but then i love the 16:9 format), and i HOPE the noise issue (which is a problem) is solved in the final production cameras.

OK!

I made all my comments before SJ confirmed that it was pre-production. We should now wait until final samples are posted...

Given that is a small P&S, even being a pre production version, the noise issue you mention is overblown IMO. My A4 prints of the images are great. I'd be very happy with them as is.

Low light may be a dfft story however so let's see what Panasonic does with NR

I only downloaded 1 image (10 of 14) and the shadow noise around the door area on the right is pretty bad. But I guess this is what passes for acceptable these days. Yeah it is pre-production, but really I wouldn't expect much to change.

I don't think 16:9 is the ratio for me, but I certainly applaud Panasonic for their innovations including the OIS on a compact. Generally I am a Canon fan, but I think they are getting complacent and slipping to also-ran status.

  • I remember that the Canon S70 went from 'noisy' to 'good' when tested by Chasseur d'Images... because of the difference between the pre-production model they had and the production version they re-tested later on...
  • We shouldn't care that much about "barely visible" vs "invisible" noise at 80 ISO, for it may be better to keep details (that gets altered by in camera noise reduction). Noticeable noise at > 200 ISO is more of an issue (and both noise reduction level are not necessarily related).
I wish we could set the Noise-Reduction level in digicams to our likings (per ISO level, per Luma vs Chroma, etc...)
