Canyonlu,

You must live in the Mts. in Colorodo, as least I have not seen that many hummers in one location since I lived in CO.
They are great fun

Sitting on the back patio last night - while the next batch of
sugar water was cooling on the stove.....this was one of four
feeders....and this is not ALL the birds in the yard at the time!!
Feed them and they will come. No flash, just a silouette shot......

Hi John, We live in Southern Orange County, So. Calif. 13 miles east of Laguna Beach, 1 1/2 no. of San Diego, 1 hour south of L.A. We are on the very edge of town, against the Cleveland National Forest, SantaAna mountain range. Perhaps that's why there are so many, but I find the more feeders I put out, the more birds I attract!!

Marilu, Would I love to see that carry on, what kind are they? Rubys the only ones we have here in NC are territorial and if I had that many that would never happen, I read you have to have lots of feeders where they can't see each other. DL

Hi DL,

We hve Ruby, Allen, and a few - I think - Rufous. Hard to tell from the book photo the difference between a Rufous and an Allen, to me. There is another one I haven't looked up, still trying to get a good clear photo of him.....very grey with a very, very dark black head, and white chest, and a white "necklace". He's very pretty, too.

In the spring, winter, and beginning summer, they are fewer in number, and always more territorial, but as summer evolves, we get more and more. It seems the more feeders, the more birds. Although when I take one down to fill it, the rest hang around there as if they know I'm coming back. All the feeders are pretty close together....doesn't seem to matter. Try more feeders (buy stock in C&H) and see what happens. It's so much fun!!

Incredible! I've several feeders up in our yard and I can't ever get more than 2 at a time to feed...they are soooo territorial! You know they say that there are twice as many feeding as you can count at once on the feeder. You have a huge number!

Hi Liz!

Yes, we do have tons....I filled all four feeders this a.m.....just got home from a day's journey, and they are drops from empty. More boiling on the stove now. It even amazes us....twilight and 11 a.m or so bring the most at one time for some reason. It is so much fun to watch them.

I like this one. It has some fine art merit to it. Standard bird shots are great for documentary purposes but there's a jillion of em in any Audubon bird book. This has more.
Looks like you got the file size figured.

Marilu,

Totally amazing! And you say they are there, year round?? Good grief! I guess you'd better buy stock in the sugar company..
neat pic..so different

My wife says she is jealous, and for you to use the flash next
time. She wants a good photo of that many at a feeder!

Thanks, Rob. It certainly isn't colorful, but does get the point

over! And yes, I think I'm dong better with the size! Thanks to your help and others....

Marilu

Thank you, Lynda.....yes, we do have hummers year around....but far, far fewer in the winter, of course. I keep only one feeder up, and have to throw away some of the sugar water every three days or so....they barely drain it....but they are there, and they say not to take the last feeder down until a week after the last one appears.....but the last one never disappears!! (I bought a 25 lb sack of sugar again yesterday)
