Most any modern Nikon mount lens will work fine with the D50 and brand dose not matter. VR is Vibration Reduction, the Nikon flavor of Image Stabilization (IS) in cannon terms. This feature allows you to hand hold at a much slower shutter speed than typical. I’m having no problem getting critically sharp photos at 600mm equivalent at 1/60th. This is an example:

I’m very happy with the new equipment and life in general. I love the outdoors so summer is a joy. I’m still learning the quirks of my equipment and am thrilled with it. Day one I was out taking wonderful photos and I’m finding it easier and easier.
