Shutter lag is my only complaint with the DX6490 I've had for just on 12 months now. I am a complete novice when it comes to photography so my complaint may simply be due to my misuse or incorrect setting of the camera. Can anyone out there advise me if the shutter lag can be rectified? The delay time is around 2.5 seconds from from go to whoa.
Thanks, Jason.

I turned off the picture review after each shot and that seemed to help somewhat. My 14 month old camera is starting to look old, I'm actually looking at Canon.

Why? The new Canon S2 IS has image stabilization, slower lag time, and manual focus. I am tired of going to sporting events and not being able to handhold a 10x zoom shot.

Don't forget that IS may not help much at sporting
events. IS helps with camera motion but does
nothing for subject motion. If you're using a slow
shutter speed and the subject is moving, it'll be
blurred whether you have IS or not.

Understood. The photos I have been taking have even had blurred stationary objects (I.e. the dugout on the other side of a batter).

The S2 does have panning IS to help stabalize the system while following an object. Don't know how well it works though.

I may be wrong, but I don't think you have to wait
the full 2.5sec for the picture to write to the card
before you can take another picture.

Try taking a picture, give it about 1 second and
shoot another one. I think you'll find the second
shot fires just fine. At least it works that way with
my 7590. You do have to wait to view the pictures
on the LCD display, however.

I got this camera for my sister a year and a half ago. It's been an excellent camera. But a little on the slow side now if you compare it to the new models.

First off. I think you are confusing "shutter lag" with "shot-to-shot" time. Shutter lag is the amount of time it takes the camera to take a picture after you press the button. Shot-to-shot time is the minimum time in between shots.

To decrease shot-to-shot times try, as suggested, try turning off the review. And you can also try using one of the "burst" modes. Also make sure you have a fast memory card, at least faster then what the camera can handle.

To decrease shutter lag times, try to pre-focus.

As far as, image blurriness due to slow shutter speeds, try using the "sport scene mode." What this does is it tries to maximize the shutter speed by opening the aperature and increasing the ISO. You can also manually set the ISO to it's highest setting. This should help. However, the higher the ISO the noiser the picture will be. A tripod/lean to/table/etc. can also greatly help!

Hope this helps!

I just looked it up.

The DX6490 has a shutter-lag time of 0.65 sec. And a shot-to-shot of

I should clarify what I posted. The time delay is between pressing the button to shoot, and the time it takes for the shutter to operate and the picture taken. So quite often , a staged photo of friends will have them asking me to hurry up and take the shot, when in effect I have taken the shot and I'm waiting for the camera to catch up. And taking a photo of sports, forget it. The subject is gone and changing in the dressing sheds before the camera wakes up!

I don't think anything can be done about the shutter lag, except to by a newer camera with better specs.

Back about the 5th there was a posting about new Kodaks coming in Oct. P850 5.1 MP , 12X with IS
P880 8mp 15x
Hope it is true.
