Its been a disappointing, wet summer in the British Isles thus far. I have been able to nip out to the botanic garden during the odd break in the incessant rain. Examples below all recorded with the C-750 on my usual settings. Some straightening and a bit of sharpening up in Picasa2.

The small lake as it starts to choke with lilly pads

Not as exotic to these shores as you might imagine...

Loved this opportunity. The shade from trees set further behind provided the perfect background for this shot. On maximum zoom too.

Sorry, that's all I have to offer this week. Tomorrow evening I'm teaming up with HiddeMans and Philip J (from OTF) for a joint expedition. I hope they'll bring large umbrellas!

(Now look, I realise Tony Blair isn't the world's nicest politician [if such a thing is even humanely possible], he did nevertheless address the Olympic Committee in fluent French - which is more than can be said for Jaques Chirac! hic )

Hi AH,

I don’t see any problem related to the weather on your pictures. I like this set of pictures very much. No favourites, all are great. Love that mirror effect on the first picture.

Looks like a great place to relax (and take a few pictures).

Weather was great here (so far). No complains. Hot and hot… After the worst winter that I remember, this is great development :)

Can’t wait to see what you guys are going to bring here!!!

Keep these beauties coming,
Alex.

the weather is not much different over here right now and will stay like it is all over the next weekend, just hope the weekend after it will be a little better. Temperature is ok now, just a little less rain would be nice.

But - no matter how lousy your British weather is - your shots are very nice, AH, I like them!

And have fun with Hidde and Philip tomorrow! (How are you going to do that - one person holds 2 umbrellas while the other 2 are shooting!?). Will be an interesting looking group, hihi!
About those politicians - hmmh, may I keep my mouth shut, please ?!
Was that decision by the Olympic Committee taken today, Paris or London?

Very nice photos. I particularly liked the first, with the lily pads "floating" on the willow reflections in the water. Nice contrast of texture and color between them. And it looks so peaceful!

Thanks Alex. Yes I like the Botanic Garden as you've no doubt noticed. Entry for University members of free - and it really is a lovely peaceful place to spend an hour or two - or indeed to take a more extensive horticultural tour! If there is one near you, go along this weekend. I think you'd like it too.

Yeah, I really hope the weather situation improves before the September. Even for UK its been wetter than usual!

Anyway, if we want non-stop sunny skies, there's always Cuba, right ?? ;-)

Thanks Dave - and I'll mention the clematis seed sitaution to Hidde. I hope the weather situation improves before the end of September! There's 3-one dayers plus a 6-test Ashes series to play!!

I guess by now you know that the IOC gave the Olympics to London. Why ?? Because Jaques Chirac is not a good diplomat. He made fun of British food and said something bad about Finland. Ahem...not a good tactic - even if its true!! ;-)

Yep - lets hope the weather situation improves. But if the rain starts pouring down, Hidde, Philip and I will just dive into one of the pubs and down a couple of beers instead!! ;-)

Thank you - glad you liked the pics. I'm a frequent visitor to the botanic garden and yes, it really is quite a peaceful place to spend an hour - or longer! If there is one near you, I heartily recomment a visit - plenty of photographic opportunities.

Unfortunately the rain here seems relentless - but I hope the situation improves before the end of summer!

Thanks. You are right - there indeed beauty in simplicity. Plants are fascinating subjects for photography. In the absence of a breeze, its possible to use the x10 optical zoom on the C750, thus setting a very shallow depth of field and being able to single out a subject. Why not visit the botanic garden in Helsinki this weekend ?? I think you'll enjoy it...

Hope you are now fully cured of what ails ya!

I really wish it was possible to control rain patterns. I'd be happy to send it to you and other areas that need it. Even for UK, this summer has been wetter than usual. Grrr!!!

Yes, London got the 2012 Olympics. And although Tony did well to secure them, Paris lost out because of one liability - Jaques Chriac! Jaques has never been the brightest of EU statesmen and a very poor diplomat - on Tuesday he made fun of British food and goaded Finland (!!) for its bland fish dishes. Even that were true - he should have picked a more opportune moment to say it, rather than 24 hours before the IOC's decision!

Anyway, hope you feel better and get out about this weekend to capture some more of that hilly countryside....horses in all!

Actually, there is one near me.

I understand your appreciation of them. A beautiful botanical garden is what started me in my career. One day, many years ago, I visited the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in New York. Walking along, I became immersed in this magical aura of beauty. In particular, I came across a very old and majestic Beech tree. (I wish I had a photo of it!). From that day on, I was led down the path that brought me to the career of Landscape Design.

So maybe I shall take a ride over to the botanical garden near me now. Thanks for the inspiration.....again, I loved your photos.

Susan

AH....congratulations to the Brits for securing the Olympic games but my sympathy for those injured by the dastardly criminals who set off the bombs in London. Hope you and your family are all right. That's just awful!

Old Claude Monet would be happy to spend some time in those gardens with his paintbrushes, rain or no. I wonder if he were alive today, which Oly would he choose for his art work???? :))

Beautiful place and fine images, my friend.

Thanks Shane - so far nonel of the people in my department have been affected by this morning's explosions. But time will tell. Just when we thought the threat of terrorism from the IRA vanished - something new comes along.

Thank you Richard for those kind words. Yes, the water lillies do have the Monet look about them. MOnet loved the garden/forest settings too as you well know. Cameras were around during his lifetime - and there must be a gallery somewhere in the world exhibiting hgis photo art. he was contemporary with one my current favourite French author - Guy De Maupassant. So Monet's paintings show what Maupassants stories often describe.

I've added my thought on Susan's thread regarding this mornings explosions in London. I'm glad to say none of my colleagues/friends/family were in the area at the time.

AH, glad to hear that no one close to you were involved. The toll keeps rising as the news comes in..........such a tragedy.

I've had the pleasure of seeing some of Monet's original paintings in the Louvre and Munich and must say, they are almost overwhelming in 'life size' scale! From prints in books, I had no idea some of them were so large!
favourite French author - Guy De Maupassant. So Monet's paintings

When I was in high school, I discovered De Maupassant through my English teacher and got a copy of "Complete Short Stories of Guy De Maupassant", at least I think that was the title. Don't know what ever happened to that book but it was filled with his fascinating stories, some a little ribald, such as his memorable "Ball of Fat"! :))

Both those men were masters at taking scenes from everyday life and creating works of art.
