I finally received my DK-17M magnifying eyepiece from Adorama.

Price: $41.95 + shipping

Installation: simple, simply close the viewfinder shutter, twist off the standard eyepiece, twist on the new and open the shutter.

Size: The DK-17M is 4mm thicker that the stock piece. I was a bit concerned about this, but it has not proved to be a problem.

Performance: Fantastic. This is a must-have option, especially if you are older and not as eagle-eyed as you once were (like me). The 1.2x magnification is subtle, just enough to be helpful. Nikon states that you may not be able to see the whole finder, but I have not found this to be the case. I do have to "look" at the right side information, but it is visible.

I would suggest using a rubber eyecup - but then I'd suggest that for anyone regardless of the eyepiece. The official cup is DK-19, but I was able to get my old DK-2 to work fine.

I just checked and Adorama seems to be out of stock again. I'd suggest just going ahead and placing the order and patiently waiting.

Hi Don,

I also got mine (last week). I would like to know if you wear glasses when you are shooting, as I do.

I may be considering using the diopter adjustment just to be able to shoot without the glasses, therefore getting my eye even closer to the DK-17M and expending my angle of view of the viewfinder.

I suppose only then it would be convenient to use an eyecup over the DK017M... What do you think?

Regards,

Mike

Thanks for the DK-17M review. Just out of curiosity, when did you order yours from Adorama? I ordered one on the 15th of June and I'm still waiting, but I saw a post a little while ago of someone who ordered one from them a week later and it shipped in a couple of days. I'm beginning to wonder if my order is lost in the ether...

Mine took about three weeks to arrive, once ordered.

I have seen many pics of the DK-17M, but -none- with it mounted on the camera. I'm curious how far it extends from the back of the camera visually. (versus in mm) Thanks!

Cheers,

I can’t find DK-17M listed anywhere in the UK. I would order from Andorama but they want an extra $39.50 for worldwide shipping.

Anybody in the UK managed to get hold of one yet?

I'm lucky in that the diopter ajustment is able to bring the finder into focus, so I don't wear my glasses.

When I do look through the viewfinder with my glasses I can just see the image, I have to "look around" to see the shooting info. This is with the rubber eyecup.

I ordered mine at acephoto.net. They are decent people and I only paid 58 dollars for 17m and DK19, was here in Amsterdam within a week.

I'd recommend the 17m for people who want a wider view, like we were used to seeing through a full size viewfinder, but the magnification of 1.2 is hardly noticeable if you are expecting to see more detail in your finder. BTW, my 17 came with a manual including a Dutch one, so Nikon is planning to sell 17m's in Europe too.

Nice review, David. I ordered mine sight-unseen, it came last week, and I had a chance to shoot with a bit. I'm liking it a lot. The view reminds me of what I had (and missed) with my F100. I'm shooting my first race with it this weekend so I'll be able to tell better how it's working for me but, so far, definitely so good.

Hi Don,

I fully agree with your review, a friend brought mine from Japan a few weeks ago and I love this 'must have' piece. But isn't the magnificiaton not 1.5 (you mention 1.2) ?

Hi Donald,

Oh thanks, I will look on mine if I can find it. On the Nikonians site they mention 1.5 and on an American site I also saw 1.5, confusing.
