V3 LCD Protector

I just bought a V3 and want to protect the LCD. Unlike the protective glass on the H1, the V3's LCD is an accident waiting to happen.

I usually buy my LCD protectors from dA, but they don't seem to make one for the V3. For all of you V3-ers out there, what do you use, and has anybody ever had one that broke.

My niece had a T1, and of course that LCD cracked. Without the LCD, it is basically landfill. I fear the same for the V3. Sony charges a small fortune to fix it.

If you tell "da" the LCD measurements they will tell you which one to use. I guess its hard to keep up with totality of new camera models.

They do make one for the V3 ( I have it). Go to the link about "new protectors" - top of yellow column on right.

Thanks so much Arnie and ncoilheat! I've purchased protectors from da before, and they make a nice product...except for the sharp raised edges on the protector. They should make them beveled.

Sony really dropped the ball by not using a glass lens protector. It's a no-brainer. I'm going to order the da on Tuesday.

Had my V3 one day and thought the same thing you did, gotta get a protector, this thing is an accident waiting to happen. Problem was, I was at work so I said, I will order one tomorrow. That night, we had a beautiful rainbow and I went to get out my camera (out of it's padded bag) and turned it on, the entire LCD Screen was white, except for that black crystal looking stuff in the upper right hand corner. You guessed it, not even 24 hours and I broke the LCD Screen. I have not broken an LCD on any camera I have ever owned. That to me would be the buggest drawback to the V3 so far. Anyway, sent it off to mavicaservice.homestead.com because Sony would not warrant the LCD Sceen as it was apparant abuse, which really ticked me off so he carged me roughly 180 USD and will install an LCD protector on it. Should have it back tomorrow.

It seems to have the protective glass covering the LCD. Does anyone know for sure if it has?

I bought the "Hoodskins" (model HSK-3), and they are good fit. (Only a mm or so is left around the edges.) The main thing I don't like about these is that they have a glossy surface, so you get more glare than the original screen. What I like about it is the soft plastic, and it sticks and seems pretty durable so far. I have not had any long-term usage.

Are the dA protectors better?

Broken LCD, no, but it looks like there might be the slightest nick in a corner, so some sort of protection seems like a good idea. Also, some posters feared rubbing/scratching the surface just from wearing the camera; I have not had this problem, but seems like something to watch out for.

Are the DA protectors easily replaceable, if the need arises?

The da Protector appears to be made of a Lexan type (read hard!) material that attaches with a very fine/thin tape. I removed mine eaily when I changed camera's and reattached it to the new camera..

I do feel it offers better protection against impacts than a thin film type protector.

Yes, a hard protector seems like it would be more effective.

I was thinking that over time, any protector itself is going to get scratched and maybe cracked, and for the sake of another ~$10 would be worth replacing from time to time.

Ncoilheat,

Does the the daprotector frame the in any way affect using any of the V3's control buttons (since from seeing pictures of it, it has to be affixed on the camera body surrounding the LCD) , especially the Focus, Frame, Ev buttons or even the buttons on the right side of the LCD screen on the V3 are quite close to the LCD screen. There is hardly any space below the LCD screen - so is the bottom part of the daprotector contoured to frame fit snugly.

I would say thet the protector is about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch larger than the LCD. The buttons are still accessible though a little more difficult.

my v3's lcd was broken after dropping it against a wooden floor from 25 cm; paid 150 euro to get it fixed. i don't know how a protector would help since it seems that the lcd assembly is made of four parts: light, light uniformization plate, the actual lcd and an external polycarbonate (or other material) transparent film; only the lcd was broken, i.e. the second component layer counting from the exterior

anyway if a protector does help, use it, it's worth the expense

It would take a lot more than a LCD protector to protect a camera from damage due to a fall! The daProtector (or equivalent) would protect from scratches and minor direct impact.
