I managed to sneak off for a few hours early Sunday morning to checkout the Humboldt Redwoods State Park near where I was. I tried this IR shot for grins using a HOYA R72 filter:

wow i like the blue river, makes the trees look like snow.

btw, what lens do you use to shoot your landscapes? I have tries all kinds of settings between 18-50 and have not found a focal range i like yet.

Lovely scene Zane!
Thanks
Can you tell something how you get this effect?
I think the best explanation is that the HOYA R72 filter (on my S2) is still letting in some small amount of visible light at that wavelength (720 nm). One is then just playing with it.

Normally, I would open the image in PS and then use the Channel Mixer tool (under the Image~adjustments menu) to reverse the red and blue output channels (In the Red output channel: If the red slider is at 100%, change that to 0% and change the Blue slider from 0% to 100%, then do that all again for the blue output channel).

In this case, on a whim, I used the white balance tool in the RAW converter in CS2 and it came up with these colors. That is about the same effect as usuing the channel mixer technique.

There is a lot of playing around and experimenting to wring out the crazy colors; but the above is the basic gist of it.

Hope that helps.

For landscapes a use the 17-35mm AFS predominantly and will use my 28-70mm AFS where the wide end isn't needed. I bought these before the 17-55mm DX was available and might consider that one instead of the two I have (17-35mm and the 28-70mm). I also have the 70-200mm VR, which is a great lens.

Cheers

S2 or S3?
S2
What ISO and settings?
Generally speaking, IR is noisier so I will shoot at ISO 100 on a tripod. Also, the light meter will under expose quite a bit, so I will use the exposure compensation of +2.5 to +3.0. Sometimes I will go to manual to get the proper (higher) exposure. With the low ISO and dark filter (9 stops!) the exposures tend to be 3 to 30 seconds, so the foliage blowing around in the breeze is always a problem.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I was kind of hoping you shot that with the S3 ... :o)
I have been hoping someone would post some S3 IR images to see what it can do.
I appreciate your time ... and photos!
No problem, Thanks

nice shot, I like this one better than the one in your other thread. The colour works very well here.

cheers

nice work, i really like the moving water.
Thanks, with the R72 filter (9 stops!) it was an 6 or 8 second exposure so the water is very soft. The light was bright enough to allow some of the "false colors" to seep through the filter to get the blue colored water (with some manipulation) A few minutes after I took this shot a soft breeze started and it would have blurred the folliage. Isn't it interesting how unique each exposure really is?

Cheers,

Thats a stunner Zane, most excellent work!
Thanks Mark! Sometimes just a simple shot like what this scene offered up will work the best.
