Epson 750: questions on ink consumption

I am happy with the quality of 750 printout. But I have a few questions for fellow 750 owners:

1) My color ink cartridge runs out after about 10 8x10 pictures at 720dpi, is that about normal?

2) After the printer color cartridge light blinks empty, I reseated the cartridge and the printer thinks it is ok to continue. But the next photo is sorely lacking red color. Someone indicated that reseating can get a few more good prints?

3) Sometimes the printer would go thru a lot of noise just like when the cartridges are loaded initially (to fill up the print heads?), is that normal and why is it happening?

Thanks!

Very interesting. I re-seated the color cartridge and the printer thinks it is a new one. The first print is lousy, so I was ready to put in a new one. But at this point the printer thinks it is not an empty cartridge. So when I push the left most button it just 'cleans the nozzle' with noises, movements. After that, when I tried to print a picture(with still the old cartridge), it is back to good quality print again. So I keep on printing, and printing, and printing, finally the cartridge gave out in the middle of the 9th 8x10 page.

The net is that I got about 20 pages on one color cartridge. The 'ink meter' is apparently way off mark in accuracy..by 100%.

Anyone else has similar or different experiences with 750?

Dear Stevey,

Not with the 750, but with the Photo EX, yes, I manage to reuse the cartridges in much the same way. Are they sharing the same cartridge, 20110?

I have noticed same meter questions. I have not re-used it yet.

I know this thread is about the 750 and I have a Photo 700, but it's the same question of ink consumption. My printer claimed to be low on color ink and then claimed to have run out even though I had only printed in black after the low-ink warning. I took out the color cartridge and it looked pretty full to me. So I called Epson, and was told just to open and close the lid of the cartridge carrier to trick the printer into turning off the low-ink warning, but that removing and replacing the cartridge can allow the inks to dry up a little, which is bad for the nozzles. I threw out the old cartridge just to be safe, which I wouldn't have done if I had read some of these messages. But maybe just fiddling with the lid would be the best thing.

No, 750 has it's own, new ink cartridge. I am on my second color cartridge now, this time I have printed 11 8x10 pages and the 'meter' still shows 1/2 full, may be this time it is more accurate, or may be this time more than 20 pages can be printed? I will post when I find out. I theories that the first cartridge has to 'fill the nozzle' and therefore less pages were produced?

I am interested in other folks' experience...how many pages per color cartridge?

I get about 20-25 8x11 prints with one color cart of my Photo EX. Here's a short cautionary note on using the Cart Life extension trick:-
http://lioncity.s-one.net.sg/~printer/features/inks/cartlife/index.html

I would advise using the trick sparingly or at least don't print thell there is not colour. You risk losing 'prime'. The other piece of advice I would give is not to switch off your printer from the mains. Use the OFF button. I have had streakging problems (eg misfiring nozzles) which could only be fixed by EPson.

Cheers

Ok, so I did the trick and got another 8 pages A4 on photo paper, but I'm now worried that the cart is going to die and the PC monitor is only showing half empty, is there any way to replace the cart before it's run out?? I'd like to do it now but I can't make the printer give me the print head to remove the cart...

Just push the paper advance button and hold it for a few second. The print head will come out for cartridge replacement. This is documented in the 'replace outdated cartridge' section in the users manual.

Note the posted message on the danger of using the 'reseating cartridge' trick. I am worried now and may have to stop doing this trick....

Yeah, sorry I don't read manuals ;) Anyhow, I just changed the cart.

Don't try this at home:

Just out of interest I dismantled the old cartridge and pulled out all the sponges... each one was saturated with ink from about a quarter from the bottom.. Squeezing them over an old bowl gave quite alot of ink...

This cartridge had already printed around 14 pages before I did the reload trick and had done another 8-10 pages since then...

I wonder if Epson can fix this "mis-measuring" of ink (I've read about bubbles, foam and air in the injectors problems) through drivers??

MIS Supply's view is that it is not actually mis-measurement...rather it is a redundancy built into the system (which also happens to be very profitable). In short, the EPson measuring mechanishm plays is really safe to ensure that there is no loss of prime.

My take on this:- use the cart extension trick but please do not use it till your prints look like a car ran over them! Just use it sparingly (ie in moderation) to get a few pages (say 3-4) and then Stop. This and the 'no switching off from the mains' rule should make sure your printer last for a while. The other piece of advise is get the extended warranty. That deals with a lot of issues and gives peace of mind to me.
