Sorry to post a little off topic, but I've tried posting in a couple of the Computer forums and no luck. I use Windows ME and I want to eliminate most of the programs in my startup menu. When I go into Programs> Startup, most of them aren't listed there. I understand that I really only need Systray and Explorer. I do I do this?

Hello Jarrell,

The Startup menu you are referring to contains programs which launch when you start or reboot your computer. Software providers often dump them there unknown to many computer users. These startup programs are often unnecessary and can place a huge drag on your system resources, considerably slowing down system performance. I've shut most of them off and significantly increased Windows ME performance. But this doesn't address your question.

This does:

Just right-click on the program icon menu you want to get rid of and scroll through and click on "delete" in the pop-up menu. If you change your mind, or do want to add a program icon there of your choice, just drop a shortcut icon on the "start" button on the bottom left-hand corner of your screen.

You can also organize your program files by clicking on:

Start > Settings > Taskbar and Menu > Advanced > Advanced

There you can and drag items to new positions; create new folders, subfolders, etc. This is a pretty neat area to become familiar with so you can control the pop-up Programs menu which can become humongously long and difficult to navigate.

Hope this helps,

gail

Jarrell, I use W98 but I think this works the same way.

Start> programs> accessories> system tools> system information, click the tools tab at the top, click the startup tab at the top. You now should see a list of all programs the computer is instructed to start from all sources. Simply uncheck any you want to stop starting at boot.

Most people leave "power profile", their anti-virus programs, and perhaps a firewall running. If you use instant messaging that will have to run also. Everything else can be run on demand. Be especially wary of server software that starts at boot.
