>>>Challenge 44: Collective Nouns, Official Thread<<<

...MOST shots have been 'done before'. The idea was not a new one, but I can guarantee the person whose pictures Grant linked to was the first one to do it, either.

What matters is that your image is very well done. But don't feel that you have stolen an idea, any more than I have stolen an idea with a sunset picture.

...clearly better. Better in composition, better in subject matter, better in your fine execution.

Life is tough enough....Never sweat the small stuff.

Gayle,

Please don't beat yourself up about this. I probably shouldn't have
pointed it out in the first place. I didn't think you were cheating
or anything. I thought you might be interested to see how others
interpreted things. And anyway, Pablo Picasso once said, "good
artists copy, great artists steal."

Sorry if I made you feel bad. Wasn't what I meant to do.
No probs, Grant. It's kind of interesting to see how others did a similar idea. I had a feeling it was probably not all that original (but then I can't think of a photo that is truly one of a kind), but it was a really fun project to pull off. My first idea was totally different....that image evolved after a few hours of thinking about it. You know when you get to that "place" where you can't concentrate on anything because your mind is going flat-out being creative? I read a whole chapter of a novel and didn't absorb a word! LOL!

Cheers,

Gayle

Michael, you can speak Strine! LOL! Now I can tell you that doing that photo was hard yakka!

I stumped my American born husband with that expression...after a few years in Oz he thought he'd heard them all.

Seems to me that "Strine" would mean "Australian" or "Australian Slang." I \ know for sure what that "yaka" thing is. My cat used to do it all the time. :D

...it looks like I've created a monster and everyone will be lining up their kids holding frames to take pics and make composites. And I want to see ALL the finished products! Bryden and I had a ball doing the Innocence pic, now she wants one with her best friend in it, her sister wants one done too, and my husband was so thrilled with yesterdays effort, he printed it out and took it to work to display on his desk.

I've written a quick tutorial for those who are interested...it's on my website, Thought and Ramblings 2 page.

And thank you, thank you for all the positive comments. For the past few weeks I've been feeling a bit blaaaah about a lot of things, but now I feel good about myself and my skills.

Cheers,

Gayle

Strine is what Australians speak.

Naaah, that'll be yukka and my cats do that too. The term is "hard yakka", let Google be your guide ;-)

Okeedoke. Did the Google and think I've got it. What I want to know is if it was always a brand name... or did someone just adopt the name for themselves? Like jeans being referred to as Levi's.... we know that Levi's came first.

Fun stuff ;-)

Although I'm not a true blue fair dinkum aussie, i have called Adelaide home for the previous nine years. The term yakka has been adopted by a clothing company as far as i know. Although i believe i know what this term means, i'll leave it to the non-aussies to work it out.

I'll spread the linguistic dialogue to the phenomonem known as "full deckisms".

An aussie variant being, "a snag short of a barbie".

Ando

Ando is short for Andy in Strine.?!

The word "yakka" is an Aboriginal word, so it came first...then the clothing company, then the slang term. As an Aussie word, it's widely used and has been around for as long as I can remember.

Oh, and Levi's here are exactly that....jeans branded with the Levi tag. Other brands are just called jeans. Levi's are also incredibly expensive here now ($150-250).

Aaah yes, my favourite type of slang, the original Aussie one probably being "not the full quid".

How about a challenge called "Low Contrast"? I have a few pictures taken in heavy fog or all in shades of gray that are really evocative -- I bet others would have interesting ideas too. The black and white grown-up/baby hands in the current contest made me think of it.

....seeing a picture by him will make you think in general but also will make you want to be like him, to be able to conceptualize and then execute a photo like he does.

I've always felt that iso was dangerous in this regards...lol

BTW, I really liked your Pidgons in Exhibition.

Win the eligible challenge and you can call the tune, (grin)

...actually, the above was the real title to this.

I dashed off a quick 250 word response on why I haven't responded....and I thought that it was damned interesting. But, you know, in an abundance of caution and even knowing there was nothing bad in the post I was going to send out to you and everyone here...I've decided to put it aside.

There was maybe way too much personal information in my response, heartfelt as it may have been. I thought to send it to you by e-mail and thereby keep it private, (though I am not too found of private mail conversations), but I suddenly realized, I still don't have your email address so I couldn't send it if I wanted.

Alas.

Be Good,

Traveller

Thanks! Returning the compliment, I just saw your Pont Neuf saxophonist for the first time (missed it last week when I looked at the exhibition section) and it's wonderful.

I don't know the posters here by name, but I appreciate the iso3200 comments, and I think the white-on-white images by Shu are really nice. They'd also be very inspiring in the "Low Contrast" category.
