Hi. These are my first night shots w/ this camera (w/ kit lens). Shot at the Oceanside, CA pier around midnight last night.
  1. 2 is my favorite of the four. BTW that's the moon - not a light.
Any thoughts?

Manual Exposure / 60 Sec / 38 ap / ISO 100

Manual Exposure / 140 Sec / 22 ap / ISO 100 (noise reduced w/neatimage)

Manual Exposure / 60 Sec / 38 ap / ISO 100

Manual Exposure / 120 Sec / 22 ap / ISO 100

very noisy - I couldn't get NeatImage to clean it up, but I kinda' like the grainy look of it.

Great shots!
I wouldn't bother to much about the grainy look on the last picture,
it adds to the nice and somehow mysterious atmosphere.

Thanks for the comments.

Yes, the lights are neat but a bit annoying too. I like the way the water turned out. The waves were rolling in at 1-2 feet but the long exposure smoothed them out nicely in an erie sort of way.

I have to say i enjoy the 4th thoroughly. I would like to have seen these in the original color. I am not a huge fan of B&W night shots... maybe you shot them in B&W tho. The tones at night are so subtle though and adding color alows you to resolve more detail with a bigger pallette of shades besides white to black. Although sometimes they can be pulled off well... like in the last photo. In your first two im desireing more from the photo... its missing something, yet not a silloutte feel. Just my humble opinion.

Awsome pictures! I happen to live in Oceanside so I know where this pier is. I like 1, 2 and 4. Very nice!

The two shots of the entire pier were shot BW. The other two were in color but the WB was out of whack and everything was an orangish/fake light...it didn't look that good.

Longer exposures will cause lights to flare like that. Here is a similar example though its kind of hard to see (look to the ships). I think its related to aperture and exposure time. I have a few other shots where my aperture is set much lower (more open) and the effect doesnt show up. But with a higher aperture setting (more closed) it does.

I personally like #2, then #4. Great work all around. I'm a big fan of night photography, I wish I had more time to put into it myself, but its a little harder now with a toddler.

I agree, the second and forth are great. Dark and wet are a good combination.

The starring in the first and third is too much. It dominates the pictures and obscures details on the pier.

It seems that lately I come home after a day of shooting and everything is poo.

This is a bit reassuring.
