If anyone has purchased the 775 camera, please let me know how it is performing. Is it up to standards like the reviews say? Is it producing sharp pictures? Are there any drawbacks?

Please let me know because i am still trying to decide between this camera and the canon s300.

Thanks

Missy: I love mine. Pictures are nice, camera handles very well, battery charge lasts a long time and you get all that Nikon know-how and features. If you look at some of the other postings here you'll see that Peter iNova is impressed, too, and that counts as a lot.

Can you comment on the low light performance ?
Can you take good pictures in very low light?
Can you take good flash pictures in very low light?
Can you take good flash pictures in complete darkness?
How does it compare to the s300 in this?

It takes images up to 1 sec long. Long enough to show the sky glow from a city at night. Of course, you need a tripod for these.

Quite good. In most cases the Incandescent White Balance will be best.

Flash is very well implemented and there is a reduced-intensity flash called Night Portrait that makes flash close ups to within a few centimeters of the lens for Macro flash.

Read the review on this site. s300 macro is actually "a little closer" according to Phil.

The first set of photos that I shot with the 775 were not as sharp as I had hoped they would be.

I discovered after shooting some more images that the problem was due to camera movement - not a soft lens.

The small size of the camera makes it is easy to move the camera when tripping the shutter. By steadying the camera against your body with both arms when shooting - the images became very sharp.

The more you practice the "sharper" the lens becomes.

Hi Dave,

I had the same movement problem when I got my Fuji 1700. It's odd shape made me prone to movement, until I learned to control my breathing and pulling my elbows into my body to steady the camera. An old camera trick is to hold one's breath while taking a shot. I agree: unsteady shooting is part of the unsharp problem.

I'm really curious of how can a camera without an AF assist light focus in complete darkness to take good flash pictures (nobody is talking about macro here).

Many others have posted problems in low light and auto focus.

Nikon has a very sane strategy for this. And pretty much anybody could have seen it coming if the right questions were asked:

Q1: Where does one focus for a flash image if you can't focus because it's too dark?

A1: At some plausible distance?

Q2: Right. And what would constitute "plausible"?

A2: The distance most flash pictures are shot at?

Q3: Right. And that would be....

A3: About here. (Where would you set a fixed focus for a camera under these conditions?)

They chose about 6 ft (2 meters). With the depth of field of a reasonably wide zoom setting that would do it pretty well. Virtually everything from 3 ft to 15 ft would be in quite good focus and the flash sensor would take care of the exposure on the fly.

In practice it does just fine. But shooting tele in the dark can really mess you up. Only if you know you are about 6 ft from your subject will the image be sharp.

And don't turn the monitor off. Without light to focus onto and the monitor off, it won't fire at all.
