Had an opportunity to shoot some photos of young birds at our local animal shelter this weekend. It was great to help out a bit and bond with the animals (not only birds) being healed, reared and given a new lease of life there. Here's the link:

and here are a few samples:

A young jackdaw. Great little fellow.

A couple of young bluejays. Quite happy to pose through the screen.

Blue herons watching a plane across the skies

The house rooster

Hope you like them.

Nice shots, Ben. The birds are so cute, how'd they end up at the shelter? Will they be released back to the wild? Does the shelter also have animals that can be adopted for pets?

Thank you elcahall :)

The birds are very cute indeed. The amazing thing about them is that the young of very different species (grebes, chicks, geese, jackdaws, sparrows, pigeons etc.) can easily be put together in one cage without them fighting. In fact, they help each other out, where in adult life they'd just as gladly fight & kill each other.

They end up in the shelter because their parents have died or left the nest, because they fall out of the nest or are hit by bad weather or are abandoned, or any other reason. People find them and then bring them to or report them to the animal shelter, whose dedicated volunteers then house, feed, rear and, if necessary, try to heal the animals. If possible, they're put back in the wild again, yes.

It is possible to adopt some as pets. Sometimes escaped parakeets or budgies end up at the shelter and if no one comes to pick them up, they are given to people willing to adopt them. Rabbits, too and ferrets. Wonderful place! And not just to shoot photos. :-)

Thanks, Kevin! Birds are very photogenic subjects, don't you agree?

Yeah, I was amazed when I saw it from up close as well. Never had the opportunity to study it, but it looks very intriguing to say the least. What also impressed me was his willingness to pose for the camera and stay still for one second. But then, it's the house pet at the animal shelter. His usually ferocious behaviour has earned him the nickname "Bin Laden" :-)
