i m thinking to change my toshiba notebook

i was amazed to see a my collegue photographer and journalist with a wonderfull sony vaio, it look like was 10 times better and bright!!

i m seeking for a notebook with the possibility to calibrate the monitor (at least in contrast and brightness)and has good reproduction of colours

i dont know if i want an apple couse it miss a lot of applications i found very versatile in the windows world

any advise?

ps it must have to capability to store 1gb of RAM

I'm wondering the same thing. Now that Apple has dropped the other shoe....no G5 laptop ever, what would be the next best choice.

Not sure if they still make it, but it was the only laptop with a desktop LCD.

Most laptops only have one light, hence the type of tft used and the narrow viewing angle (height wise) which means a slight change in viewer hegiht gives big change in darkness/lightness etc.

The Sony xbrite and black onyx have two lights, and are better for consistency, but they still have colour accuracy concerns. However, the gloss black onyx gives wonderful depth to shadows and looks the most impressive to client.

Finally the acer 17" - which actually has 4 lamps in the screen, just like a desktop - which means battery power is short, and the unit is very heavy and big (7kg i think). But for the ultimate screen for colour accuracy on a laptop this has to be it. The ultimate for client viewings are those with the gloss screen such as black onyx.

thanx

is called only acer 17 ?

i dont need for clients, but for me to make post processing better as possible

the best could be found one used, at good price, buy and extra battery and enahnce RAM up to 1gb

You'll know it because it wieghts 7kg - perhaps nor really a laptop. You'll find earlier posts - about a year ago, on the acer 17" on this site. Search engine is down currently so I can't look.

Maybe a fast sony with an external screen like a nec1980sxi is better bet.

Also for photoprocessors, the high battery life centrino may sound good, but when on battery the processor is on go slow, so they are not the best way to process images - plugged into the mains they are then at their best.

Take a peek at the HP NX9600 laptop.... B&H sells it for around 2k....

17" 1600x1080 Xbrite screen...3.6 Ghz... 1gb Ram DVD Writer.
Upgrade the memory to 2gb and it'll scoot.

Not sure if "xbrite" is good for image-processing. I am looking at Sager NP9880 with a 17" WUXGA (1920 x 1200) TFT Active Matrix Display (by Samsung). Go to: http://www.powernotebooks.com - recommended by a dpreview forum contributor. A bit heavy at 12.5 pounds but a true DTR (desktop replacement). Supports an external monitor and two different applications on each monitor simultanrously.

I've got a Dell laptop with the uxga screen. 1600x1200. It's better than most tfts I have seen. I like it a lot.
