995 vs. 990 ?

in summary
if you want REAL close macro - go for 990 price....
if not.. get a better camera Oly E10
or for more light sensitivity.... Oly 4040

better zoom (4x)- so more info on the chip ......
lower noise and a noise reduction feature.. I think 990 too noisey...........

you SHOULD stretch for an SLR type for realistic/practical ops thru the lens viewing in daylight

I own 990. Buy 990, the diference doesn´t worth. Use money to buy memory and rechargeable batteries.
The ONLY advantages i see on 995 is that it makes less noise and has better color saturation, advantages that would be worth if the lens was as good as 990, witch it isn´t !
For me, you can put whatever gadget you want´t on a camera, but you can never go back on photografic quality !

I think your extra 200.00 would be well spent. 4x lens versus 3x. Pop up Flash reduces redeye, Quickview on the picture review just to name a few of many and the majority of my pictures have been sharp right out of the camera, little if any touchup needed..

I own both. When I bought my 995 I wasn't sure about the use of plastic in the housing (still not) and the switch from AA batteries to a proprietary battery. But, I must admit my 990 is sitting on the shelf now.
When you add up all the tiny improvements (flash, lens, playback, CF+ Type II, etc.), the extra $200.00 may be worth it.

If you have the extra money go for the 995. I traded up from the 990 and have found the new features extremely useful. My wife just went on a trip and took my 995 with her so I borrowed the 990 from the guy I sold it to. The 995 fit my hand better, was lighter, has easier battery placement, and the additional zoom is really handy.
I often find that I regret spending less after making a purchase.

It is possible to find Nikon 995's for under $700. Go to pricewatch.com and you can find plenty for under $750. Just make sure you ask what comes with it. The cheapest ones fail to mention that they might not include the one year warranty, battery, compact flash memory, or battery charger. Bait and switch, they get you in than rack up the extras that are standard with everyone else. Quite outrageous, like buying a car and then having the salesman ask if you want wheels.
I bought mine for under $700 at CompDirect. Do price research on other things like filters, optional lenses, compact flash memory as they will assult you with options to buy these items.

I think the 995 is worth the extra money - the popup flash was a huge improvement red-eye-wise, the extra zoom range is very useful, and the battery, which I thought would be a bad thing, actually turns out to also be a big improvement - easier to deal with, lasts as long or longer than the AAs AND comes with a universal charger. I took 190 shots on Fine with the LCD on for all shots and the battery was still alive...I was impressed!
I bought 2 additional batteries from B&H for $30 each. I'll be on a canal boat in England next month for 10 days with no capability to recharge the batteries. That'll be a good test!
If the Good Witch of the North appeared and said that for $200, she'd change my 990 into a 995, I'd tell her no thanks; there just isn't $200 worth of additional features in the 995.

YES! I traded up, and I'm very glad I did.
The flash is much better. The metering seems to work much better too. And it doesn't hurt to have the longer zoom.
