I am looking to get my first digital camera. I wanted one that I can point and shoot (95% of my pictures) of the family and have a good movie mode. But I want one that won't leave me wanting more in a few years. Is the S2 for me or am I wasting money? Thanks.

Actually, the S2 might be more than you need--i.e. 12x Zoom--and almost certainly will not leave you wanting more--unless you decide to take photography seriously. I think the biggest drawback could be larger size --but all in all a very reasonable choice if you think you'll have some use for the zoom
good luck

Its a wonderfull camera and very fun to use with the 12x zoom. Easy to use also with plenty of room to grow if you want to. I love mine. My wife uses it on full auto and she gets good results. She refuses to use any other setting.

get Canon SD400 (5MP) or SD500 (7MP) instead, they are more suitable for you.

I dont understand people saying this camera is not good for beginners. Its an easy camera to use plus it has room to grow. There is no reason someone can not use this camera on Auto or P mode and get wonderfull shots. Plus, the zoom is just so much fun to have.

I heard those compact ones have problems with the LCD breaking. Is it true?

The only advantage to the SD400 or SD500 is size. The optics aren't as good, the zoom is poor, they have very few features to grow with, and they cost as much as an S2. I like the A520 as a terrific first camera. 4MP, 140mm zoom, small enough to fit in your pocket, $239, and has enough features to be creative. Just my opinion.

the LCD screen crack issue was exagerated a bit, just make sure you get a camera bag and you should be fine. go to cnet.com and read the user reviews of both SD400 and SD500, it seems most of reviews are very positive,

the reason I recommend these two cameras is their sizes being a lot smaller than S2, SD400 is about $100 less (same mega pixel) and SD500 is about the same price as S2 but smaller and with more mega pixels (7MP). As someone else said, if you want lots of zoom then you may want to consider S2.

I would recommend the A95 as a great p&s if you're not interested in the big zoom of the S2. The A95 is a very good value and will allow you to grow.

I don't think you can say that "they're more suitable for you"

I am basically a "point and shooter" and I Love my S2. I really don't know anything about mf or settings or anything but I love the 12X zoom, the video and playing with all the differnt features!--I'm sure I'll eventually get better and better at using it to it's capacity but even on auto I'm completely happy with it!

You're going to love this camera, just put her in auto pilot and enjoy.

The zoom lens and IS are going to wow you.
