FZ5 flash photos

wat about the flash distance, my photos turn out underxpose.all shots taken aout 20FT.is it not powerful enough

its flash only goes about 15' or so.

turn up iso or use EV (or turn up the flash power, I think there's a setting for that, also).

otherwise, use a slave flash. the built-in is only enough for really short distances (like most popups, to be fair). its not reasonable to expect a $300 dedicated flash's range from a built-in popup.

those pics still look to purple to me.

if I hadn't seen good skin tones on my monitors before, I would say its me. but I -have- seen realistic looking flesh tones on my displays. I think its the fz5.

not everything on the fz5 is perfect. we should be honest about the good and the bad.

(else we'll start sounding like the canon guys who can't seem to admit their 'baby' (s2is) has some flaws) ;) ;)

flash color on the fz5 is NOT its strong point. someone please show me some out of the camera flash shots to prove me wrong.

Hi,

really i dont see this purple color....

Normally i use an Analogic Nikon F100 with Sb28 etc etc .. . than im little used to see good color.... :-D
Can u try to "adjust" 1 of that portraits removing the purple u say?
I begin to think my monitor is not so good :-(

I never said FZ5 is perfect, there r some things i really dont like...... but i love the lens and OIS.

ciao e saluti Alessandro,

take a look at this edit I did and see if you can see a diff:

http://www.grateful.net/toody_test1.html

I didn't spend too much time with this, but I tried to cut the purple tint as much as I could (using very old tools).

how do those before/after shots look to you?

(apologies to toody - if you want me to remove those edits, I will.)

lens is its best part. OIS helps but I still find I need a tripod to get really sharp shots. but not having one (maybe I leave it home sometimes) OIS is better than not having it at all.

but on the 20, you go into the wb menu and it is the bottom setting, you arrow to the right, point the camera at a KNOWN white object (don't use printing paper, it has varying levels of blue or grey), and arrow again to the right. You should see a distinct change in the lcd. You can use white or 18% gray cards, photo paper or a white shirt will also work. When I am at a band performance, the stage lighting has a terrible yellow cast so I will do a wb on the performer's shirts. Works great.

its called xv. it was born in the 80's and was available on most unix platforms.

http://www.trilon.com/xv/

it appears that there IS a windows version! follow his links. I have not tried it since I tend to run mostly opensource programs (and xv is available in source compilable form).

HTH,
Nice work on the before and after. What software do you use for
this - looks impressive.

thanks! I'll try that. sounds like you 'sample' some stuff that is, by the photog's opinion, a 'reference white'. makes sense.

I remember from the old film days that green grass was a good substitute for 18% gray. that worked on my old nikons, I would meter off the grass and that would be my Poor Man's 18% Gray card ;) but for white balance, of course, that wouldn't work.

Flash photos are OK. You really need to be close to the subject (I'd say about 8 feet away the max).

No matter what anyone says, it sure seems like to get excellent results you'll need a SLAVE FLASH and a C-Bracket.

The SLAVE is about $50-$70 and the bracket will run you about $40.

I must say I had some pretty good results at a wedding with the built in Flash---but only if I was very close to the subject.

Manual WB makes a HUGE diference with the fz20, I would think it
would hep with the fz5 as well.

If you set manual WB, is it used by the camera in the flash mode? The FZ5 manual states that the WB is automatically set when using the flash, except when WB is set to Daylight or Flash.

Are you referring to your external flash? That could be the difference.
