I all,

I've search the forums but I couldn't find my answer (maybe i'm too dumb to find it) :)

I've got a ZIO SM reader and I would like to know if I format a Olympus SM with the smprep.exe will I loose the panorama functionality?

And what are the benefits of formatting vs. Deleting all files?

I guess ind the c990Z (d490z) I cannot format the SM in the camera, rigth?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
edias--Olympus C-990Zoom (Europe)

I am quite sure you will loose the panorama function, but I have no direct experience. Olympus warned somwhere that formating their SM in some other digital gadget (mp3 player or something like this) wil destroy the pano function. SMPREP goes deeper than others and rewrite also heading of the card, which is not usually accessible.

I usually format my SM in my camera because it rewrites the date in SM. It helps me to keep the track after my holidays (I use DW).

I don't thing so. I have C960 and it works.

I felt terible last evening because I WAS WRONG!

I tried to format my Olympus SM in my ZiO reader - pano function was there even after "full" format!

You CAN format Olympus SM in ZiO reader (smprep.exe) without loosing pano function.

But still I thing that there maight be situation when the software will decide to rewrite the critical part of the card (maybe if the card is detected as being damaged).

Question about formating in the camera (C960)

1.camera is closed, LCD monitor ON, menu ON

2.select the fourth icon(C960!) from the top (looks like dust bin),and push right arrow
3.select the icon which looks like hammer on the sheet of paper
4.confirm once again
Thats it.

Does it work?

Thanks,

Yes, it works, But I tought that this function was only for deleting all files, I did not know it was the format...

Now, about the format in ZIO.

I too tried last night to format with smprep.exe and the pano function didn't go away. But then I've tried the hacked version of smprep.exe (that I've made following instructions of a web site) and with the first hacked version (which damages de CIS of the card) and the the smprep.exe(original) when formatting doesn't add the Pano feature.

After that I format again with the damaging smprerp and it give an error, we say OK to the error and it tries to full format but fails, so you have a "damaged card" (the same appens with a card that allready has pano function).

Then I Format with the second hacked version of smprep.exe(the one that adds the pano function) and guess what? Pano Function again in the card!!! That's great for other brand/cheapest cards I format with the damaging smprep.exe and then with the good and adding pano smprep.exe

If you have some questions feel free to drop me a mail.

P.S: If you like I could send you the files. (This procedure can damage a card. Try it at your own risk. (This may not work with other readers than ZIO USB Smartmedia))

Thanks for the information. I enjoy playing with all digital things and I look forward to try it myself. If I have any problem I will ask you for help.
