smugmug or pbase? which do you recommmend

I researched about 20 hosting sites 2 months ago and ended up at smugmug. I can't decipher all of my notes now, but they seem to indicate the strike against Pbase was a 300 MB storage limit for about the same as unlimited smugmug storage, and $35 more to get to 900MB. I've only been with SM for 2 months now and I'm at 716MB.

PM me for a $5 off SM code if you want to go that way ;)

Looks more professional, unlimited bandwidth, use your own CSS to create any look you want... or use their selection, very reasonably priced, loads of traffic if you want your images seen, great search engine, and more. If you want to sell photos from your PBase galleries, you can just stick the PayPal cart code into it.

Although I prefer Flickr, I have a Pbase account too. How od you do the PayPal deal exactly? I might be interested in switching my Pbase over to do that since it is kinda dormant now.

I haven't done it yet-- check out Daniella's PBase galleries, as she's done it. The code you can get from PayPal, on their website (this I know, as I got it myself). The code is then either inserted into the headers or the CSS. That part I need to figure out.

Another thing I'm exploring-- other sites that you can order prints from. The GALLERY script includes bits of code that you can include in your galleries. Seems like you could use that as a template for adapting to the PBase scripts.... or maybe these places offer the code for you. Figuring it out is something on my long list of to-dos.

This is something I've been meaning to get to for the longest time-- guess it just took a shove.

It's really as easy as it seemed-- it's a form (PayPal's code) that you can just stick into the CAPTION section of the EDIT IMAGE interface on PBase.

One caveat: I haven't looked at this thoroughly-- some of it may be something that is proprietary-- something Daniella custom coded. If that's the case, then you'd need her permission to use it. Here's what I did with it:

I mucked things up enough that nothing should work properly-- not that anyone would buy this image. It would just be a total bummer for someone to fork over dollars and me never know about it.... and the person supposedly doing the ordering never getting a print. That would be too weird. ;-)

P.S. I'll be taking this code down soon, so take a gander while you can

I use smugmug.com I currently have about 9 gig of images up, although will be taking down quite a bit this summer.

They let you set up how you want it to look and even give directions to help you out with replacing their banner. Their customer support is stellar and they handle all the billing , printing and shipping for you.

For me it was the best deal I could find. Here is a discount code if you would like to give them a try. mg8tGiWU91302

I've got several domains of my own and do keep some galleries on them (among other things), but I finally got a PBase gallery of my own just for the reasons you are talking about. It's just an awesome thing they've got going.

I evaluated pbase and smugmug both. They both have trial periods. Overall smugmug cuts it better and exceptional customer support.

If you get smugmug, you can try FAWBI6Jp3239M as personal coupon that you can put in referral while signing up. This will save you $5.

When you goto individualpicture, you have option to share it on boards, forums and friends. You can use that link to embed in the messages

The easiest way to link to a Smugmug photo is to open the photo in Smugmug, right click and select properties. Then copy the URL and paste it into your message. Be sure and copy the file name of the resolution (S, M, L) you want displayed in the post.

I use Smugmug because of the unlimited amount of storage space. They do have a 4 GHz monthly bandwidth limit however. But that is pretty tough to reach in normal use.

You forgot your Shameless Plug disclaimer.
Hey Nancy,

I think this is a bit unwarranted, given your 'shameless plug' for pbase earlier in this thread.

Can't we just say there are pros and cons for both, and leave it at that without stooping to personal attacks on people for putting there opinions forward.

Cheers,

David

No, it's not unwarranted. I'm not sure how these guys are getting away with spamming the place with their codes, but I think I just saw one too many. The "oh please" had more to do with his saying that PBase is fracturing the OP's images. It's just not true.
