>>>Challenge 43: Good Vibrations, Official thread>>>

also congratulations to mlynn and all of the other placegetters :)

Was driving back to my office when I saw a guy sitting on the center barrier on the freeway, playing a guitar next to his broken down car. However, when I was able to get off the road and get to a shooting point, he had stopped.

quite clear.

Voting for your own image or having friends , relatives vote is prohibited all votes from this source will be removed and the entry can also be disqualified .

i have asked 'Bluelegend' to set the rules out clearly in the Voting Booth so there are no excuses for not knowing what is required.

1. To vote you must be a Dpreview member and you must use your Dpreview handle if newbies vote they must place their email address in the comments column of the voting booth.

Read Below. if you want to cut and paste it to the Gallery.

1. You must be a member of DPreview or your vote will be eliminated.

2. You must use your Dpreview handle when voting or your vote will be eliminated.

3. New voters must include a valid email address in the comments column when they vote or their vote will be eliminate.

4. If your Entries receive votes from friends, relatives, or yourself the entry will be eliminated.

Hey, thubleau, did you see my post in response (in the 42 challenge thread) to these rules? You might have because this new challenge thread was started soon after I posted it. Here's what I

I've been reading through this whole thread with mixed feelings. On one hand, can't we just have fun & play fair? Do we need to worry about all these rules?
Well, that was sort of answered today for me at least. I was really discouraged when I saw what was obviously going on in the exhibition category. Now I'll just say right now that I am glad secret came forward, admitted what happened, everything is cleared up, no harm done. Hey, he even voted for one of my images. I was holding my breath that not all of his votes would be disqualified! ;) LOL I know that my images aren't good enough YET :), but if the challenges end up going down that path, then there will never be a chance.
Actually, what a minute, my web site does have a several thousand unique visitors each month. Hey, this whole thing could work out. HA HA HA But seriously, I would really rather have other photographers here that I respect say my pictures are good.
It was resolved today. But it did show that we do need to have something in place to try to prevent this sort of thing from happening. As far as the solution presented, for #2 maybe changed the wording to say "Dpreview handle & artist name (if different) must be used when voting". I think that would clear up the confusion about using real name versus handle. I use both. When I read the rules, that is what I thought I was suppose to do. I post the pics with my name, but vote (& post comments for that matter) with my name as given with my entires & Dpreview handle in parenthesis. I kinda like having both names included anyway.
It is really #3 that concerns me. If I were brand new, I might hesitate posting my e-mail address out there for the world to see. Is there a different way to accomplish the same thing? I don't know if this is possible, but could the pop up box that appears when you place your vote be changed to say something like: "If this is your first time to vote, be sure to go to the voting challenge thread at dpreview & confirm your vote. If you do not post there & verify your dpreview account, your vote will be disqualified. ..."
I submitted my e-mail address when requesting the pbase password, so I don't have a problem with submitting my e-mail. I just would hesitate before posting it out publically. That's just my opinion. Call me paranoid, but I already receive enough junk e-mail. Don't need those spider bots finding my e-mail address...

Ill plead guilty as charged for not reading the rules correctly.

Actually the whole issue cropped up for me when I have having a conversation with my wife, who is currently working as a 'coach' in her job. (think Tony Robbins style life coaching) she asked me if I had placed any votes for my own image - I said that I thought that would be pretty tacky sort of thing to do, but she seemed to think it was some sort of subconcious feeling of self worthless ness. :-)

Anyways, its all cleared up now for me.

I that adoption of these ruiles is premature.

Premise: Voting is not a priviledge which we, selected, are bestowing upon lowly cheat prone laymen, but rather a useful feedback from a larger community interested in photography. We would like to attract a serious vote and discard non-serious one
1. You must be a member of DPreview or your vote will be eliminated.
Why not member DPreview OR Pbase? Pbase is hosting our galleries so it is only natural to allow their members vote. Their vote can be only beneficial. Besides, not everybody is interested in participating in DPreview forums where too many threads are like this:

"Ohhh this 20D banding, how DARE Canon sell this camera?"
"350D is a plastic toy and is SOOOO small for my large hands"
"Dell orders SHIPPED"
"This kit lens is dogtoy"
2. You must use your Dpreview handle when voting or your vote will
be eliminated.
see above
3. New voters must include a valid email address in the comments
column when they vote or their vote will be eliminate.
I would not bother to vote with such a rule. Why should I give my email address to just about everybody?
4. If your Entries receive votes from friends, relatives, or
yourself the entry will be eliminated.
Again, I would look case by case at this. It is enough to discard an accidental friendly vote and apply harsher sanctions only for repeated cases.

I think that we had a very positive experience last time when a person made an error, realized it and it was corrected in a friendly manner. I believe that we should resolve these issues in a similar manner in the future. Besides, it has a side benefit of keeping the voting thread alive.

And the last. There are many ways to distort votes One such way is to look first at the current results and vote only after this. I do not see how it is less destructive than vote stacking or friendly vote.

they can and do - through the pbase voting thingy. I've seen challenge entries come up on the popular photos a number of times.

I do agree that posting your email addy in the public voting booth seems a little out there - if nothing else - could it be a spam magnet?

...as, I might add, so do you.

I like very much your submission in Exhibition...smart stuff is always a turn on for me and the thought behind that image is very smart.

Because you can't enter eligible, (no canon camera), maybe one of your three exhibition images should be current...just to give yourself a challenge.

Looking forward to your future photographic submissions.

Best Wishes,

Traveller

I'm sorry, I'm not quit following through here. :)

But maybe that's 'cause I'm gettin' really tired, I should get some sleep, finals are comming up and I don't want to be too exhausted.

And I think I might have to get started looking at some of Angela's work more often, hehe...
Slaap lekker ;)
