I found this nice bag for the D7. It is a "PROMASTER" and was $20 at my local store. I think that it is model 720 for compact SLR, but I'm not sure because I threw the tag out (duh!). They had quite a few bags and this one fit the best. It is small and light and has pretty good padding. The camera fits in just perfectly. There is a small punch on the front for your 6 sets of NiMH for your D7 ;) plus a mesh net on the side that I use for my phone. They have different colors. The bag has it's own strap that you can remove (I did) and you can just use the camera's strap to carry the bag, the strap can come out of the bag on both sides and over the top. That way you always have hold of the camera even if you forgot to close the bag up.

I just bought a similar bag (same shape, little bit smaller) made by Samsonite (treking line)

It's possible to place in the D7 + Ansmann Powerline 4 charger + 2 extra set of NiMh + cables.
Provided with strong cross-strap for trekking use.
Soft adjustable parts sustain the D7 insied of the bag.
It cost 27 $ Vat included

very good build quality (it's Samsonite), nice colours available (mine is balck & Red).

That's were I look for! Especially I like the six-set-NiMH compartiment.
Again funny: I HAVE 6 sets:
2 sets 1600 mAh GP
3 sets 1800 mAh GP
1 set 1800 mAh Ansmann

I was looking for 1800 MAh AA's instead of 1800 mAh. (M=Mega, m-milli)

Factory loaded, since I can't pay the bill for charging them. The D7 can work for ever on such one... Don't shortcut it, it could change the weather worldwide...

Can it also store a one CF card in this bag? :-)
See if I can get one...

Jake.

Yeah, there is room for a CF card, a lens pen and a filter too!

The nice thing about this bag that I didn't emphasize is that the camera JUST fits in there, like it was made for it. I don't see how Giovanni can have a smaller bag, but maybe just a little, I'd like to see it because I like small bags, I might trade this in if that was smaller. Well, plus the fact that this was cheap too.

With the camera in the bag, lens down ready to take out, there is only about 1/4 inch clearance on all sides, just enough so that you can get the camera out. The D7 viewfinder is just level with the top of the bag if the camera has the shade on, you can't fit the camera in wiith the lens zoomed out. The bag top bulges out a little, so you can put the camera strap on top of the back of the camera (even a padded thrid party one like I'm using) and still close the bag if you want to (you can use the camera's own strap to carry it, or the bag has a detachable one). There is about 1cm of padding all around the bag, which maybe adds to the size but I like it, I already dropped the camera in the bag once (just a foot onto some soft grass, so it is nice to have the padding).

Blah blah! Bryan

Hi Jake,

Your consideration of Mega and milli is metric interpretation. Regardless of the Upper/Lower case nomenclature, either is always milliamperes in small AA/AAA cells. You (were) joking; right?

Speaking of bags and containers...

Have you ever run across anything like a plastic container that holds exactly (and only) four AA batteries? One such item came with the camera I am now using. The small, lightweight translucent case (which snaps shut securely) holds each AA battery in its own little compartment, so that the batteries can't move around and come into contact with each other. Haven't seen this kind of box anywhere else. One web site that sells batteries and chargers offers a plastic tube that holds more than four batteries, but it's a clumsy-looking thing and doesn't look as if it would fit well in a small-ish camera bag.

Somewhere in this world there must be a warehouse full of 50-gallon drums, each containing 5,000 of the little "compartmentalized" plastic cases I'm after. Must find that warehouse... :-)

Sure! I wouldn't be able even to lift the M-versions :-)
They do not exist of course.

Can you post a picture of it? I'm very curious about it. It can also separate drained from charged cells, very interesting!.

Well, this is downright brilliant of me. I just looked in the bag for it...and it wasn't there. I've managed to bury it somewhere within the wreckage that is my office. I'll track it down eventually.

There's nothing about the box itself that separates drained from charged cells. I got into the habit of pointing freshly charged cells all with their + sides facing the same direction. Once they'd been drained, I would put them back into the box with + and - in alternating directions to alert me that this batch had been used up. Of course, if I can't find the silly box.....

A stupid solution,

What I do is to use those little zip-lock plastic bags. The really small ones that are only about 1.5" tall. I have no idea what you are supposed to use them for in the real world, storage of a single carrot? A have the cells each set in an unmarked bag. I carry a couple bags marked "dead". I either put the dead cells in one of the dead bags, or if it is just one set I'll drop it in my bag loose; any loose one need charging is the rule.

The nice things about the bags is that they are cheap of course, and they can "conform" to your available space; you aren't stuck with a rigid shape, plus they are super-light and you can throw them away if you have to.

No, not stupid -- much better! No futile searches for mythical warehouses needed. :-)

If the bag were small enough it would make possible this "same direction/alternating direction" system I use to distinguish live batteries from dead ones -- and the batteries wouldn't be able to shift positions within the bags. Are they of a size that you get in grocery stores, or are they the ones you have to order through jewelry-supply catalogues?

George,

I bought one based on Bryan's suggestion. It is a nice bag. I found it at a local photo store, but I also found it on the net at http://www.precision-camera.com/buy/bagspromaster.htm

The above site wanted $6 more than I paid, plus another $10 shipping. You'll probably save money if you can find a local supplier.

Steve
Where did you get this bag? Have searched all over and can't find one.

Thanks in advance for any info.

George, I just got it at my local camera shop in Madison WI.

I think that a lot of shops carry these, stop in a few and see if you can find one. Bryan

Steve,

Thanks loads, I was going simple trying to locate a source. I'll get the
specs and model number from the site you mention and try finding it
locally. If not at least I know "now"where to get one.

Thanks again,

George

No, that isn't it. That one is tapered at the bottom and looks a bit larger. Probably for more of a full sized SLR. I didn't look but you would think that you could find these on the net somewhere. I do wish that I had saved the tag, I think that it was model 720. I can stop at the store later this week and look at the remaining ones; it isn't my favorite store.
