I am a digital newbie and am looking to purchase a D70 kit.

I understand that there are some focal length differences on older model Nikkor lenses when used with the D70. I need a primer.

I believe, for example, that my (old) 28mm will behave more like a 40mm....and a 210MM about like a 300MM....Is this accurate?

I thought I had seen a thread on this before but cannot locate it.

Yes, you're basically correct. All of the Nikon dslrs have a crop factor of 1.5, so your 28mm would look like a 42mm and the 210 would look like a 315mm.

Lots of threads on this, especially in the d70 forum, IIRC. Search for crop factor or lens multiplier.

Also look at the glossary link here, for more info.

Interesting. Thank you. Follow up: Does this rule apply to all lenses, or just those that were pre-DX?

Specifically - Nikon's 18-70DX which is often sold with the D70 in a kit - is this roughly a 28 (27)-105?

AFAIK, it applies to all lenses. The DX lenses are supposed to take advantage of the smaller sensor, by being smaller, just like the lenses for consumer cameras. The consumer cameras are often marked with the real focal lengths, but have crop/multiplication factors as well. For example the Sony 717 has a 4x crop factor that is normally cited for comparison to the 35mm film standard.

I believe so. To be honest, I've not investigated that issue thoroughly, so my understanding of the DX lenses is quite limited.
