Whats so special? Enlighten me!

I can fet the 50mm 1.8 for £79 or the 50mm 1.4 for £179, think I'll get the 1.8 and put the £100 that I save towards another lens. Happy days !

Bullhead could you please point me in the right direction for this lense at £79 please

Thanks for that, I assume they are a reliable company as I might go for the Sigma 70-300 xxxxx blablabla model that everyone is talking about.

While reading alot of threads on this forum, I've noticed alot of
people own a 50mm 1.8 lens. What is so special about this lens that
makes every one want to have it? Obviosuly it seems to have a large
avaiable aperture but i was wondering if there was anything else
about it that made it great?

I'm still very new to this lens thing and i dont have the ability
to know what makes a lens or indeed by just looking at the name of
a lens, what the abilities and what type of pictures would this
lens be more suited to?

Comments, reviews, pictures, songs...you post what ever you want to
enlighten me!

Thanks

Kirsten
I don't have the 1.8, I got a used 1.4 for the same price as the 1.8. I love it for all the same reasons stated by everyone else. Most of the pictures I take are of my daughter and most of them have been taken with the 50mm.

It's a great buy!

thousands taken of the baby using this lens, here are a few recent ones

This lens looks like a nice little lens and is now on my wish list at B&H (I don't know when I will buy one). I have a 35mm f/1.4 I got free from work (look in my post history and you'll find the story) and I can say that the difference in low light at f/1.4 is phenomenal -- I can get very nice handheld shots indoors with available light with little blur. I was amazed -- as you said, my lens collection tends to be in the f/4-f/5.6 range (that said, I'm not selling my 24-120 VR as it's a great lens even if it isn't the sharpest Nikon makes -- it's just too useful as an all-around lens).

The 35mm is great (it's f/1.4 and it's got that old-school metal build that means it can take quite a beating) -- its only failing is that it is not autofocus and it has no chip to tell the camera what f-stop is set, so I need to get ahold of a light meter to be able to use it well.

And sometimes I like to shoot things that move a bit much for manual focus. So this lens is definitely on my to-get list -- especially at $95 (with shipping included).

Lucky you, I have not ordered yet but needs something soon as I'm going to the Goodward festival of speed on the 25th. I look forward to some pics. Also need a zoom maybe the 70-300 sigma macro thingy.

In the old days we used to say that a good portrait lens was in the range of 75-100. This was a good range for head and shoulder shots. So in that stead, the 50mm with the 1.5 multipler gives the 75mm. Lots' of uses. I own it. I like it. And the f:1.8 is pretty fast. Not much being made that fast now.

I also have a Sigma 28mm f:1.8 that I like very well. It gives me a 42mm FOV which is a wide normal. I like it also.

Those samples sure make my monitor look good. Maybe I do have it calibrated right without any gadgets. I'll have to get out and use my 50 a little more.
