Would you still consider a D1x a great camera if it was made a while ago? I came across a used one but haven't verified the age yet b/c the owner selling it is overseas. But it may go for under $1500. I'm looking for a fast camera.

What do you think?

I primarily use mine for portraits indoors and out. I process them in 10 Mp mode. Here is a shot I did outdoors: [it is full size...BIG]:

Here is another:

The only complaint I have about the D1x are the batteries. They don't last very long so you will need several. The Battery Barn sells them for $40.00 and they are good ones. Other than that, it is a tank and still a joy to use. If you want to see other photos from this camera just let me know.

I am using the lowly D1x, and its underachiever D1h kin. Both still GREAT cameras. Until I need more, they are here to stay.

I just found out that the seller wants $2250 + shipping/insurance. Supposed to be brand new--he has a lead on 5 of them and will get one for the winner of the bid. It's too much for me, but someone might like it--ebay.com--closes Sunday morning early.

Sounds like a 2nd party scam. What is the Item #?

Sounds like a second party scam. What is the item number, or link to the auction. While I was bidding on my D1h, I got a bunch of bogus offers to buy one.
BE CAREFUL.

Avoid overseas scams like the plague!

With that said...shop around here domesticaly. Recently our local pro shop had a used D1X for about 1500 that they would let you check out at the Nikon factory authorized service center a mile up the street....a much more secure deal than the thing you were perusing.

For similar money I'd go with a used D2H to get vastly better battery and flash etc. I'm keeping mine for now but it's seeing very little use and similarly, other owners re letting theirs go. It was never realy a $2000 body but the short lived pricing makes it the best used deal around at 1500 or so.(to my loss....grrrrrr).

Still a very good cameras if you not compare to D2x wich is in every aspect better (except flash sync)
sergio

P.S.
from where is the camera you are looking for ?

I just picked up a really nice D1x with the buffer upgrade that allows you to shoot 14 NEF's / twenty some odd Jpeg's before the buffer fills. It's heads and shoulders above my D100 both performance wise and quality wise.

I needed the camera for it's 1/500th flash syc at iso 125 for outdoor fill flash. It really blows away my D100's 1/180th flash sync at iso 200 for fill flash. I guess a D70 (1/500th at iso 200 flash sync) would have worked too, but I really needed the added buffer depth as well. So a D1x with the buffer upgrade was really my only option for my budget.

I just upgraded to the D2x, primarily to take advantage of the crop mode, which performs very well with long lenses. The D1x has been great and meters fine with the older manual lenses that I like to use. And it is built like a tank. I have no problems with the color.

I think that if the resolution of the D1x is adequate, then it represents a fine value. I've put mine somewhat reluctantly on ebay.

How much did you get (if you don't mind my asking)? I saw one where the guy wanted $2250 (reserve), but I don't know if he got it or not.

It is a fine camera. My main complaint was battery life. I just sold mine on Ebay for $1550 USD.

I just purchased a minty D1X (firmware but no buffer upgrade) for $1000 at the local camera store. Ebay has them going from $900-$1400 for the same thing - with Buffer upgrade look at from $100-$400 more.

A nice one with buffer upgrade should not cost more than $1500. Stores are taking them in for $800 or so - Ebay equates to much higher prices.
