PC users switching to Mac for Security

"Like a give a sh*t about a bunch of Mac bias articles stating that some note the word some PC users are switching to Mac because they have the brains of a knat and can't learn the simple easy steps to keep their PC clean."

What the heck is a KNAT? Looks like YOU have the brains of a gnat! No virus on your pc? Good for you. Now how about a spell check moron.

"Nice try Shawn but on a Mac you don't have to do any of that"

No Sh*t! That is only because of the 3% market share. The advantages of the PC is worth having to run AV software.

I like the fact I can build good value PC for only $900 that at 2 years ago blows away any Mac at that price and still does today.

I like the fact I can enjoy Skytools

I like the fact I can play Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Gallaxies

I like the fact that PhotoShop is PhotoShop, Flash is Flash and Dreamweaver is Dreamweaver.

I like the fact any time I want I can upgrade any part including motherboard.

I like the fact I can have more then one optical drive.

All of that was well worth having to spend 5 minutes 2 years ago installing AV software and clicking on the auto update and autoscan check box.

Folks if all that could be commented on is spelling then that means I am right and I have won the argument.

I like the fact that you can do all that stuff, Shawn. I like the fact that you really, really like your computer. That is so kool. I think you've got exactly the computer you deserve. Now go away.

No, what it means is that a person who is so stupid as to not know how to spell a simple word such as gnat, should not be taken too seriously about a much more complex issue like a computer. Try to keep up with simple logic and not show your stupidity so clearly. I read these forums and try to learn and sometimes give advice on subject that I know. I've read your many rants on the Mac vs PC topic and find your posts to be so absolutely void of any valuable info. I would not normally even lower myself to address your post, but today was just one too many. These forums are to be helpful...if you cannot do that in a positive way then please shut up. I use both Mac and PC everyday. I have for the past 9 years, run both systems and without a doubt I have had a more stable experience with my MAC. It is that simple. Can a PC do some things better? Sure, but the hassle when it cannot is not worth it to me. Stop telling lies to the less informed and try to contribute on a more educated and honest level.

WOW! Looks like a great way to live and work with your computer.

From the tone of his posts I think we can all assume that Shawn spends far to much time in his parents basement... "sith spawn"? Dude, grow up!

Shawn, the point is not that you can deal with your PC. The point is that MOST of the rest of the PC using public doesn't WANT to deal with all the problems. BTW, you are definitely in the minority if you are that free from problems, and you seem to think the rest of the world is full of morons... you know, like the CEO of Intel and one of the most respected computer security experts in the country, those people.

Hmmmm... I'm kept busy away from the boards for some time.. I return.. and what do I find? Oy!

A bunch of no-nothing Windoze trolls professing that the world is indeed flat.

I haven't bothered to read all the posts... it seems as if the message has been delivered... or are the loonies still claiming that Windows is "just as secure" as Mac OS X?

I suppose replies to my post will let me know if more needs to be said. Word of caution for those wishing to debate me on this... if I sound a bit arrogant... rest assured... the knowledge base behind the arrogance covers both platforms with multiple engineering ratings.

Here's my short statement on the subject: The Mac is inherently and radically more secure than Windows... UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Security through obscurity ain't it... anyone who props this up as a justification or an explanation should spend more time studying the difference between their elbow and mass of fat that they're sitting on... because they'll have to master the differences there before they can begin to comprehend the differences between a Mac and a PC. Nuff said.

Let's see here - a Windows PC on the Internet can get infected in 15-30 minues without a user doing anything. This is a FACT as reported by many security and computer news organizations.

The fact that this can happen is a pretty damning statement against Windows. Not to mention IE can get infected without the user doing anything - I've been to sites on my PC with FireFox and virus software that inject viruses without your knowing....

Now, your simple plan for a PC is:
1) Buy virus software and keep buying it every year for $30-50 per year.
2) Buy anti-spyware software and keep buying it every year for $30-50 per year
3) Buy a firewall program or hardware firewall
4) Hope you don't become infected

Or:

1) Buy a Mac and laugh at all the hoops PC users must go through to keep their machines working.

I deal with Windows all day and my platform of choice is Mac.

My plan is simply to let auto-update install security patches.

I don't have virus software installed (where you can get quite a few for free anyway)

I don't use Anti-Spyware (I installed one of them some time ago to see if it finds something, but, no...)

For the great virus wave that occured last year existed a patch, but many users didn't patch their system.

Nevertheless, though I use Windows, I think Mac OS IS more secure (be it because of better security or just less marketshare doesn't really matter in the end), and I would recommend anyone who wants to have a secure system and does not need a Windows-PC for some reason to buy a Mac, or use Linux instead of Windows.

Apple's June quarter strong as consumers switch to Mac for security

Full article here:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1098

“The most recent study comes research and investment firm
PiperJaffray, which earlier this week spoke with 20 of Apple's
specialist resellers regarding business in the June quarter and
trends with various products. On average, Apple specialists said
that over 16% of customers who buy a Mac from their stores are PC
switchers. In Apple's own retail stores, this figure is closer to
50%.”

To add to your argument...

I have to put up with many PCers at work. One guy, I call super geek because he is quite good at building PCs and gaming has always tried to convince me to go to the "dark side", the PC's. It's cheaper he said! It's faster he said! Use the right anti-virus and you'll be fine he said! WELLLLLLLLLL! Last week his super machine was down for a whole week with an infected drive which he had to replace. Need I say more?

Regardless of what anyone has said, if it wasn't for Mac we would be on PC's today still doing DOS. Even Bill Gates wouldn't want to see Apple gone, where would he get his ideas from?

No Sh*t! That is only because of the 3% market share. The

Has nothing to do with market share. Most used Web server is Apache, most hacked is IIS. It's fundamental system architecture differences, not market share.
I like the fact I can build good value PC for only $900 that at 2
years ago blows away any Mac at that price and still does today.
Wrong again. My new Powerbook is faster at day to day tasks than my 2 year old IBM A31p 2.0Ghz 1GB machine I use every day at work. The PB is also faster at Photoshop. And they both cost roughly the same new, with the IBM probably being a little more expensive.
I like the fact I can enjoy Skytools
I like the fact I can enjoy iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD.
I like the fact I can play Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars
Gallaxies
Don't game so I could care less. Last time I played a game on a computer was Castle Wolfenstein in '93.
I like the fact that PhotoShop is PhotoShop, Flash is Flash and
Dreamweaver is Dreamweaver.
And PS runs better and faster on a Mac.
I like the fact any time I want I can upgrade any part including
motherboard.
That's nice. Been there, done that with my PC's and I always ended up replacing pretty much everything else too.
I like the fact I can have more then one optical drive.
I can too and I use a Powerbook. They are called USB or Firewire drives. You can even use them on your PC.

Nice try, though.

OK. I have read through this whole thread. I switched to Apple computers, which run the Mac OS becuase every student in my program at school is required to have an Apple Computer. I have been using it since February or so. Let me tell you, I have had many updates, yes, BUT none of them have completely obilterated my machine, (as SP2 did to my dad's dual boot, Windows-for school and Linux on the other side.) He is completely running Linux now, BTW.

So a Qusetion for you Windows users, do you have Tech Support to call, as well as, a store to walk into, were the staff are knowledgeable, and friendly, free classes that ANYBODY can attend to learn how to use thier machines, and able to get you on your way? Because, I have a web site I am able to go to, a phone number to call, a Store to go to, and they are all very patient, and helpful options too. As well as the OS is very user friendly, and built on a more than 50 year old code (UNIX). And yes, I Semi-Quote the Apple Store Genius that there was one update in the last FOUR years that was not good, but I know that this is expected with computers. I have one click of NO Pop-Ups, yes, they happen with Mac OS, but not as many are written for the Mac OS. Also, many spyware blockers ARE spyware themselves, so people who DO NOT know were to get the right kind, are NOT protected. As well as, I have Virus Software that was provided from the school, BUT I dont run it, as I have not had the need to. As well as, with a Windows Machine, you have to run All of these programs all the time, the Mac OS does the defragment as you are working, one less thing I have to worry about doing. Why should I have to buy a Virus protection program? I would rather put that Money towards OUTPUT from my computer, like iLife, or Photoshop. And a friends house, they are up all the time, and there is almost ALWAYS someone on the computer, and it is very sporratic, so when are they supposed to do their updates, and computer maintenance of their Windows Machine? They aren't able to do this, hence why their computer is slow ALL THE TIME!!

Also, that when I delete something, there is a 1% chance of me. OR ANYBODY for that fact of EVER RECOVERING IT!! When I have deleted taht something, and I create something new, the whole new file will be saved in that ONE spot. UNLIKE WINDOWS which will plop that one file ALL OVER the hard drive, here, there, and EVERYWHERE and will have to work HARDER than the Apple Machine in order to retrieve the files as fast as you have asked for them. (This is why you are NOT able to go on processor speeds alone when comparing machines. The Apple with the Mac OS Processes the smaller computations of the UNIX foundation Faster on the smaller chips.)

Your most common people getting Viruses and the like, DO NOT know what they are doing with their Windows Machines. They go into their local chain store/ computer store, and buy a computer, becuase they want to do all those things that others have listed before me, and when they do them, they do no know that they can become infected. Or they do so by mistake. Majority of people say OHH!! I can get a computer for 400-500? My kid can use the internet, and MS Office for School? OK! I'll get it!

Computers are like cars, no matter the type of OS, or anything, you need to maintain them in order for them to keep running properly.

My friend have a Masters in Computer Science, and his wife works at the local Computer Shop. Their daughter obtained 2-3 viruses that were the big ones going around at the time, in the last 3-4 years that she has been away from home. they have spent MANY hours trying to get rid off these viruses, sometimes a whole weekend. Is this worth it to me? No.

My dad has been using linux for a few years now, My sister switched from Windows to Linux two years ago, and they both have not looked back. She said she would rather use a UNIX based system than a DOS. And the stupid thing her school did, is that she needed special authentication to get on the network, and they said that they would shut HER down first if therre was a virus in the system or something that was a problem LINUX does NOT get viruses!!

So in the 5 Months, I have had my machine, I have only had to repair permissions and that is about it. And besides, something funky happened Between my iPod and the computer, and all I had to do was an iPod reset. Also software updates too. Not as much time, as if I had a Windows Machine, and I wake up in the middle of the night, and think I have to do something for school, or I am unable to sleep and want to do something, but OH! I can't because I have defragging going on or something of the like! Sorry I like my OS working FOR me, NOT agianst me. When I got my Apple I was skeptical at first, I asked someone who knows and they said, No, you do not need a Virus Protection Program for it at all. A friend was suprised when I first bought it, I took it out of the box, and turned it on, and IT WORKED! I like my dad and sister, have not looked back, as I use Windows Machines at work, I HATE IT!

AS I SAID BEFORE: Computers are like cars, no matter the type of OS, or anything, you need to maintain them in order for them to keep running properly. IF YOU WANT LOW MAINTENANCE GO FOR A UNIX BASED SYSTEM, IF YOU WANT HIGH MAINTENANCE GO FOR DOS.

Well said, Shepha!

And here I thought I was going to have to start knocking heads... :-)

Looks like Go Vols and his ilk have scurried away... maybe the fact that PC World just awarded Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, "OS of the Year" has reduced these fools to tears.

Thanks Daniel

And yes indeed PC World did name Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger "OS of the Year". I have added 2 links to this info on the Tiger page here:

http://porg.4t.com/Tiger.html

Read and weap Shawn :-)

Ken
ps, the Mac mini made it on the list as well :-)
