Been seeing a lot of threads with air show photos recently so I thought I’d chime in with my contribution. These were shot last weekend at the Planes of Fame show in Chino, California. The weather was blazing hot (lots of heat haze) and the planes were backlit for most of the day so conditions were very challenging.

I do a lot of commercial aviation photography but this was only my second air show. I used the kit lens for the static displays (performed like a champ) and the Sigma 70-300 APO MS for the in-flight and taxi shots. The Sigma performed to my expectations except when photographing the smaller aircraft at 300mm – couldn’t get a shot in focus to save my life.

Chance Vought F4U Corsair (1/500s f/6.3 at 300.0mm iso100)

Northrop Flying Wing (1/500s f/9.0 at 190.0mm iso100)

A-10 Intruder and P-47 Thunderbolt (1/500s f/9.0 at 168.0mm iso100)

Boeing B-17 “Miss Angela” (1/400s f/8.0 at 190.0mm iso100)

More in my gallery (and more to come as I continue processing my images):

Wow, these look great! Did you have to do a lot of PP on them as I don't really see the heat haze you were referring to...If you did, what techniques did you use??

Great shots (these and all your galleries)! I have this lens and have not mastered it like you.

Do you shoot in RAW?
How much PP do you do (and what program)?
Did you use a polarizing filter?
I assume you used the hood if the sun was a problem.

Thanks for sharing!

First, thanks everyone for the kind remarks on my photos. The air show was a lot of fun and I hope to attend a couple more this summer.

The heat haze is a problem when the aircraft is relatively far away from you and close to the ground. You probably won't see any take off and touch down photos, as those are the ones that were killed by haze. I don't know of a post-processing technique that corrects heat haze (but it would be nice to have).

It’s a learning process, I’ve just mastered the art of not showing my cr@p photos ;-)
Do you shoot in RAW?
Haven’t taken the plunge into RAW yet. Don’t think the DRebel in RAW mode would be fast enough for an air show, anyway.
How much PP do you do (and what program)?
Photoshop Elements 2.0. Just the basic stuff: crop, levels, resize, sharpen. For aviation subjects I often process the sky and the aircraft separately.
Did you use a polarizing filter?
No
I assume you used the hood if the sun was a problem.
I did use the hood this time, but I often don’t. The lens seems to be very resistant to flare.

Very nice images.

One small correction, the A-10 is not an Intruder, it is a Thunderbolt II. Thus a bit more symbolism when flying in wing with the P-47 Thunderbolt from WW II.

The Navy A-6 is the Intruder.

If I am not mistaken, the Planes of Fame P-47 is the only remaining flying Razorback Thunderbolt, all of the others flying are the later bubble canopy version.

Yep ... I can not count the number of times I have hit "Post" only to see half a sentence left out. Or the wrong image posted with a none matching caption.

T!

Or spelling errors, but then I have no spelling errors, it took me years to develop this splinter dialect of the English language.

Hi Phil. Wow. Great shots you got there. I was there on Saturday and I was in the area right in front of the A10 so my view is not as great as yours. I had to leave early as well to catch my flight home and to avoid traffic so I missed the ending of the show. I plan to come back next year for two days. Thanks for sharing these wonderful pictures. Here are a few of mine.

A question from a "novice" : have all these great pics been taken shot by shot or with AI servo ?
They all look too crisp to be true
;-)

Hi Phill. I used AI servo at first then switch to one shot focus later. Please remember that we need to sharpen the pictures a bit with photo editor software. Hope this answers your question.

Nice shots, but the Intruder is the A6, and the A10 is the Thunderbolt, although we often call it the Warthog.

Nice to see a flying wing in action, I'd only seen the static display at the new Smithsonian Annex.
