I'm hoping to have mine tomorrow... I'll deffinintely let you know if I find any things that I think can be improved.

I do have a question now, even before I get mine... Somone has mentioned that the Nexto-CF has some ablity to tell you if the CF card that is inserted is the same as the one previously copied... It was speculated that this could be used as a way to verify the pervious copy worked. What exactly is checked to detect this potentialy duplicate data?

Can you tell us what kind of verification that the Nexto may do just as a routine procedure during or imediately after the data has transfered from CF to HDD?

As for the warning that the CF card was already copied once... does that apply only to the last copied data/folder? or does the Nexto look at every folder it's got to see if any of them match the contentents of the CF card that is currently in the slot?

Thanks for offering your support of this product here.

Good attitude!
That will give you another plus on my personal Nexto judgement list :-)

And to the thread starter: as Hans-Jürgen already told too there are
already quite a lot of informations and discussions here about the
Nexto.

If I understand well we can not charge the batteries during power on... This is a bit annoying..

Got my from Nexto from ebay for $194. Very fast shipping (the unit came from Singapore to NYC via FedEx in 3 days)… nice

The unit comes with the bottom cover without any screws so that you don’t have to unscrew anything to install the HD. The screws were in a separate plastic bag and they even included the screwdriver… nice touch.
I charged the unit, installed the 80 GB HD and reattached the cover with screws.

I pressed the button to start and the button got stuck depressed which caused the unit to turn on and of constantly…. Bad sign.

I removed the top cover (the same 4 screws as the bottom one covering the drive) and the button popped up. It took me several tries to figure out that the problem was the wrong orientation of the clear plastic surrounding the button. The problem went away after lifting it and putting it back in after turning it around to the side. Not terrible problem, but annoying and reveals an obvious QC issue.

The build quality is good, but far from great. The CF slot is completely open and leaves the circuit board inside completely exposed so the use of the included case seems mandatory. It seems solid but not something you would like to expose to any outside elements…. too bad since it’s supposed to be a storage device for a photographer on the road.

The only other negative comment right now is that when you touch the button the unit turns on instantly. No doubt it will happen frequently when you have it packed in the bag and that can easy turn into disaster. You don’t want to shake or hit it when a spinning disc inside contains your precious data. There should be a way to make a change in the firmware so that it will take a long press or double click to turn the Nexto on.

That’s it so far. The unit is very fast and it looks like it’s the best PSD without all the fancy gimmicks out there.

Nexto-CF checks if all files in the directory of HDD has same name & same date/time & same size with CF or not.

Look at every folder. Not just previous one.

That's because of heat problem.
When P_On HDD & Nexto-CF generates heat so The case get's warm.

If we enable charge unit during P_ON, then charge unit also generate lot of heat, so making the device too hot.
This may lead to bad operation.
So we restricted charge during P_On.

Yes, it's some inconvenient.
But we posed more portion to the stability of operation.
That's the reason.

This problem was because of length of switch Knob. The length increased 0.1mm longer than we designed. This 0.1mm increase came from plating.

During MP, we get to know on this and modified all the device but you have one. I'm sorry on that.

And thank you for the other critics.
I'll add them in my action list and try to apply that at next version.

sticking in the HDD is a bit hairy.you have to sort of slide it in and wiggle it in.

Would be nicer if you could lift out/angle the connector so you could see it was connected properly.

ditto on the hd. i was concerned that i might bend some pins when removing it... but it is pretty easy [and safe] as i removed the hd and replaced it with another one without any bent pins or major issues.

also on the power, it does seem a little backwards --- intuitively, i would assume that holding the button down would power the unit on. and pressing it once (while not holding it down) would turn it off instantly.

i think the 'exposed' cf opening is fine. yea, it would be nice if there was a spring hinge cover that flips back to cover the slot when nothing is inserted. but the leather case flap, which covers the exposed 'hole' anyway, is sufficient enough.

it also would have been neat, but not necessary, to put a usb type-A slot on the unit. thus, effectively turning it into somewhat of a 'bridge' to copy data from a cf card directly to a thumb drive or vice versa.
of course, this would be somewhat of a different unit at that point.

I got mine today. I purchased mine from 'eos' on this forum, that all went as good or better then I could have ever expected... He even had charged my battery... which helped me get a jump on using my NextoCF.

I've only done a couple things with mine so far, but I am impressed. At first glance, used as a external firewire connected Harddrive, it seems faster then my internal HD on my laptop. Now my lap top is a few years old, but still, I was really impressed with the proformance when used this way.

I took my 60G Fujitsu HDD out of my Vosonic 3310, put it in my Nexto-CF and turned it on... After a little while it came up, it left all data that was previously on the HDD intact and created a Nexto folder...

I used Canon's DPP software to view/verify some old data I had from when the drive was in the VP-3310, it took like 2 seconds per Canon RAW image to display the thumbnails for some images I had. When I do this same function from data on my internal drive it takes about 3 seconds per image to do the same thing.... My internal drive is probably slower then the Fujitsu I have in the Nexto, but anyway I was impressed none the less.

With a PQI 512M card I have, I was able to transfer at 5.45M/s from CF to Nexto's HD. With a 1G Sandisk Ultrat II card I have, I was able to get about 9.6M/second.

Now, quite frankly... my old PSD the VP-3310 is admitadly a DOG in terms of speed... so any increase in speed for me would be a very good thing. My laptop has a USB 1.0, so I was never able to get any decent speed even from HD to laptop, with the USB 1.0 a major bottlneck... Since my laptop also has a firewire port, that's what I've used so far, cause I thought it would likely be faster...

Anyway... I'm a happy camper.. My only negitive comment so far is about the price... After shipping and all, I was up to like $185 for this PSD... Considering it has no image viewing and only a CF slot, the price I paid seems a bit high... I only paid $100 for the VP-3310. Now, I think if/when there is a US distributer or two for the Nexto... then this price should come down, to maybe around $120 or so... Now if I'd paid $120 for it, I'd not even mention the price.... Even so, I'm glad to have the Nexto so far, and since I'm too impationt to wait for a US distributer, I will not feel too bad about the price I paid for long, perticularly since my data transfer speeds have improved GREATLY as a result of my buying the Nexto.

On my desktop PC, using firewire, transfering data from the Nexto's Harddrive to the PC's HD, 18.3M/second. Just under 4 minutes to transfer 4.27G of data... WIth my VP-3310 I could have took ashower while waiting for that much data to transfer across a USB 2.0 connection.

Thanks for your post. Please post back at a later time your battery life judgements.

Hi,

As I initially stated, all this has been discussed in other threads.

The worst-case battery life is 45 minutes with the Hitachi HTS541080 harddisk (pocket oven) and the Hitachi 4GB Microdrive. With this setup, you can transfer 11.1GB.

With CF, the battery lifetime is longer, the record so far is around 26~27GB per charge. But that depends a lot on the CF speed.

Recharging takes about 1h25 with the AC adapter.

Here's the thread discussing internal/external battery and charging:
