...they're not much good.

Get the kit lens (Canon EF-S 18-55) and the Sigma 70-300 APO Super Macro II instead. The price is roughly the same, and you'll get a much more useful all-rounder and a much better telezoom. (If for some reason you can't get the EF-S 18-55, go with the Sigma 18-50/3.5-4.5, it's just about as good.)

Hi Jim,

From your post it looks like you are able to spend $200 on a gift for your mom. Good for you!!!

Looking at your mom's prior posts, she already has the 18-55 "kit" lens that came with her rebel.

Rather than give her another lens with close to the same range (the 28-80), I'd really recommend the Canon 55-200:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000CCW64/qid=1117122021/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/103-7048515-6262201?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846

It would be a good match to what she has already.

Best of luck,

Eric

That's a strange rating.....

Wolf and Ritz have been around for many years, coast to coast, and brick and motar. I doubt buying from the website can be that bad...

I do internet prints from them a lot without any issue...

And no 6 month+ rating? That's very strange.

Guys, you will have to know how to interpret resellerrating.com a little bit also. Wolf Camera shows a toal of 4 (four) lifetime reviews. That's not enough to judge them at all. And they still get a 5.6 lifetime rating ...

If you are ok with the price, then I doubt you can go much wrong buying from Wolf Camera, even though I have never boght anything from them.

Dan.

only 4 ratings, and no long term from a comapny and website that's been around forever? I find it very odd. Should be a ton of people commenting on them over the last few years.

I bought the Sigma APO at Sigma4Less ($189 delivered). Not "L", but for the price you can't go wrong. I plan on using it for at least 6 months, then upgrading to the Sigma 105 macro and Canon 200/2.8"L". I believe the extra stops on the Canon would come in VERY handy (as well as the extra image quality).

I find I use the APO mostly around 200mm, for both regular and macro shooting. I've only had it a week, so I can't say much more than it's a good deal.

I have a Canon 24/2.8, 50/1.8, and Sigma 70-300 APO, and seldom change out lenses. I'm either indoors shooting family with te 50/1.8, or outdoors with the Sigma. xIf you're willing to change lenses, image quality should increase... but there's a lot to be said for "one" zoom.

To Eric and all who has helped me decide on a lens for mom thank you!! I will look into the canon lens you suggest...she uses it primarily for taking photos of her first grandchild who is always on the move...we created a photonut with this mothers day gift. Eric you were right about her lens...no wonder she says she learns so much from reading these posts...thanks again for your help and when she gets the guts to post be honest with her she gets very upset when people are not honest with her
