Rich,

So where abouts in MN do you live? I live south of Minneapolis in Savage.

I took a look at your galleries. Some real nice stuff, of course I have a fondness for the ice shots (given the xxxx months of ice :-) I also noticed the number of cameras you have been able to experiment with. The flower shots with the A1 really look nice - any favorite cameras - or different cameras for different subjects?

Glad you joined the challenge!
Drew,

I've been living in Anchorage for the last 4 years. But I'm
actually in Minnesota now, and will be moving to Indiana at the end
of the summer. Hectic, I should be 'Rich the tramp' right now, and
the name is going to haunt me once I'm gone for good.

Oh well,

I'm staying with my partner down in Northfield -- she works at Carleton college. (I actually graduated from St. Olaf years back so have longer term MN connections too -- parents still live in Plymouth.)

Yes, from about December to April up in AK I felt like there was little BUT ice to shoot. Lucky for me I like close-up work I guess, there's always something new to see at that scale.

I did love the KM A1 for macro work, unfortunately when I got the Panasonic I gave it to my father so don't have it to work with any more. The Pani fz20 is a great camera, although I've had more problems with purple fringing than I predicted given the reviews and things I saw people say about it. For pure versatility, I can barely imagine beating that camera, but it isn't quite as good at close up work as I'd like (no tilting lcd and the tele-macro isn't anything spectacular without close-up lenses attached -- I use the Nikon 5 & 6T). I've been using the Sony F88 for lots of macro work lately, great little camera (not quite as compact as I'd like for a real carry-anywhere camera), and I really love the swivling lens -- great for getting the camera into strange positions and still knowing what you're going to get.

And now I've got the E300, which I've been using pretty much full time since I got it. WONDERFUL camera, no regrets, the best (by far) of anything I've owned. The OLY 50-200 has close-up capabilities that I didn't know it was going to have when I bought it, so that's been a nice surprise and has let me save up a bit to get one of the macros when they're all finally released this fall. Really been enjoying getting to know this camera!
Glad you joined the challenge!
Thanks!

Gerard had asked if I would show what the "soft and smooth" thing really was - stop those smirks!

It is a child's spiral slide in a playground. It was taken 100+ miles from here so I can not get a decent pic of the whole thing - but there is probably enough to get an idea:

Thanks,
Brent

Some one had suggested during one of the first challenges that we not reveal the names for our pictures until after the voting.

We had never discussed it before. What do you all think?

To be truly honest, I find for myself that it is a little hard to be 100% objective with the person's name attached.

On the other hand, I would not want it to get so rigid that if a name & picture become associated together that the picture becomes disqualified.

What do you think of trying it in the competition gallery - it would leave the exhibition gallery open for doing critiques - which I really enjoyed.

Thoughts?

I would love to know what your placeholder is in the exhibition gallery - or what Drew's ridge lines is - after looking at his for a while it looked more like a topography type of map with saw lines cut thru - I cannot describe what I saw first looking at it :-)
Excellent Brent,

and there was I thinking of vanilla ice cream - shattered my
illusion - maybe we should do that after the challange reveal our
sources.

Brent,

th placeholder is simply foam and bubbles generated by a lock on a canal - I needed to enhance it as it was very play and the orginal is noisy too but it's a favourite abstract.

Drew's ridgelines is interesting whrn I first saw it I thought the LHS curved outwards but on llloking at again you can see the ridges are grooves - still don't know what it is

To be honest I never really look at the names - so it doesn't bother me - It's the picture every time - but I don't mind - brings a bit more objectivity to the whole thing. If we do I agree that the exhibition should be named so we can crit.

I guess thre is nothing in the rules but I'd have thought that
voting for your own images was not really right
I'm very sure someone (Adrianox) did state this in the first round.
Maybe it just got omitted from the rule text.

It did also state that people who contribute are supposed to vote. I don't think this always happens and to be fair, it should.

If this is the perception of the group, then, as I said "delete" my votes for any of my images. Although, in the future, I think the voting rules as written are adequate. I don't feel you should be obligated to vote for someone else's images if their images do not move you to do so.

I would vote for myself. However, to me, here it does not "feel right". Since it does not matter to the outcome for this round (I believe Drew won quite handily) why not leave his votes in?

Whatever we decide as a group I think we should write it in the rules (pro or con) so it does not need to come up again.

What do you all think?

Phew! bet there are lots of mirrors in your house!

In that case, 'more T vicar' deserves 16 points for the title alone!!

Makes me titter now just repeating it. But then I am a sad twisted individual who went to see Frankie Howerd live ......

Hi,

yes as you say Brent it won't make any difference to the results - but since I've just done them in anticipation of no extras I'll leave the spreadsheet as it is - Results soon.

cheers Gerard
