I think the h1 will surprise everyone first of all one of its lens is ED as this should take care of purple fringing that the f828 suffers from as for the lens not being a carl zeiss with todays computer advancements high quality lens can be made at lower costs one big thing about the h1 its runs on 2 AAs while the canon s2 takes 4AAs more backup batteries on those long trips add to that 1.8" screen for the canon 2.5"!! screen for the h1

Welcome to STF Alex. I was saying in another thread today that the H1 looks like a very interesting camera. If Sony can keep the noise down it can be a real winner.

I can't wait til the H1 comes out! I agree with Alex! It will surprise everyone!!! I saw some sample photos and the pics looked 3D. Beautiful colors!!!

It doesn't take Compact Flash cards. Dumb. Sony loses many buyers by sticking to memory stick only cameras such as the H1.

I hope your right , I got a closeout of dsc-p73 and didn't think much of it not being a non Zeiss lens until I realized this was the worse camera digital I ever saw from Sony. Now I would think long and hard before I buy a non Zeiss lens from Sony. Why can't Sony just put it all together? Their dsc-p 100 came so close and while I have not tried their newer cameras ( dsc-p200) it doesn't seem to phase Sony that we have some discontent here.

I didn't think much of it being A NON ZEISS lens I meant to say but now I would think hard and long before I bought another Sony without a Zeiss lens. Having said that the photos from the camera looks ok. I can't understand what Sony was thinking.

Yes, this appears to be the first time Sony is using ED elements.
None of the other known Sony made Carl Zeiss Lens have ED elements.
However there is 1 asp. element only whereas F828's Vario Sonnar has 3.

Usual CZ lens coating gives off a greenish hue.
H1's lens gives a distinct redish hue.
I suspect the coating is different.

BTY, Sony solved pf on its recent W-series.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the H1 performs.
Can't wait to get my mits on one & try it out.

Yes, things would have been perfect if it had a CZ lens, &
optical stabilizer.

But then implementation of the CZ Vario Sonnar in the F828 wasn't perfect anyway.

Maybe Sony got it's ED lens from Nikon, seeing Nikon gets it's sensors from Sony.

One ED element is enough, many Nikon lenses have just 1 ED element including the CP8800.

Number of batteries the camera uses? Of little real consequence. If the camera that uses 4 batteries gets twice as many shots, then I'll go with the 4.

LCD size? That's important to some. A deal breaker? That should depend on the camera as a whole. A small screen may be overlooked if another camera excels in other areas.

Image quality? Here's the biggie. It's also the unknown variable. If the H1 does a good job taming the noise, If the NR doesn't turn images to plastic, If highlights don't get blown out, if the image is sharp across the entire focal range, if the IS works as advertised, then the Sony will be the hands down winner.

If the Sony doesn't stand out from the crowd, then it will be a toss up between the and sony. The FZ-20 will be a tough camera to beat. Man, that thing takes nice pictures. I mean sharp.

Man!!! Think again!!! LCD size has everything to do with swaying a buyer!!! Logically the bigger LCD lets you see your image more clearly and lets you see whether you should erase it and retake the pic!! I've had a W1 from Sony which had a 2.5" screen and then I got the F828 which has a 1.8" screen! OUCH!!! What a difference!!!! Once you go to 2.5" screen size, you never go back to something smaller!! That's Canon's big downfall.... small LCDs. When will they get with the times!!!

Anyway, that was funny what one poster said that maybe Sony's lens is a Nikon since Nikon is using their sensor... :)

But I asked Sony at a recent photography show and they told me that the H1 actually has the same Carl Zeiss lens as the other P&S cybershots. They just aren't allowed to use the name because they "tampered" with the lens using their Image Stabilizer. I believe it. That's not the first time manufacturers allow a company to use their product but don't allow their name to be stamped on. By the way, I had a P92 before my W1 and while the W1 was better, the P92 with the Sony lens (not named Zeiss) took sharp, nice photos. You should have seen how sharp hair was in the photos I took of people!

image quality is my bottom line...and actually, I want the heavier camera. They keep making them smaller and lighter, but I like the heft of a camera like the 828. Images are sharper with more mass, thats just physics.

I do wish they'd keep cramming more pixels into our EVFs though...I want a million, and I'll pay for it happily.

I'm worried about the CF, but still waiting (kinda) patiently.

I don't really care about it using CF or Memory Stick. My first camera was a Sony so my first memory was a Stick. No big deal to me. Yah they were more expensive but so is Sony anything! If you can afford a Sony, you can afford the Stick! I love though that my 828 uses both. I think Sony needs to regain their income from cameras and memory sticks and then again a camera that uses CF and M-Stick will be released from Sony.

I want to have a really good tiny camera that will fit in my purse or fit on a necklace and not give you a neck-ache, but I also want my Pro camera. A big camera. If you're gonna have a Pro camera, it's gotta be big. It's gotta be a handful, that makes you control it and feel like a real photographer. Tiny cameras make you feel like a Snap-Shooter. I want both. I have tried a lot of cameras, seriously, a lot and right now there is no tiny camera that has amazing image quality. The T7 is pretty good though and it's calling my name, but I'll wait for the technology to improve more for tiny cameras. And one with MPEG4 will be the perfect tiny camera. Or how about MPEG2 ??? !!!! Awesome!
Oh well that will come. Maybe next year???

And I'm still eagerly anticipating the f828 replacement this winter or early next year! I can't wait!

LOL, now there's a good one. I'd rather not have an LCD and have a camera with excellent: metering, image quality and dynamic range.

The big LCD is THE feature to lure consumers these days (because the technology to keep up the megapixel race is slowing down) that doesn't mean that more serious photographers put it that high on their list. Although I admit it's a nice feature, I'd rather have a clean picture and a small LCD than a noisy, plastic pf-filled picture on a large LCD. What is way more important to me on an LCD is zooming in to 100% to check the focus accuracy. a 2.5" LCD will not show more accuracy in a "fit to screen" mode than a 1.8" LCD (not noticable).

just my 2 cents
